The Impending Attempt to Oust Speaker McCarthy {10/1/2023}; Patrick McHenry is now Speaker Pro Tempore {2023-10-03}

Note to self: Do not read “as her” between “up” and “as”.

Time for the vote!

Shit, they’re not even out of the ‘A’s’ and it’s already up to 4!

Wow. See ya, Kev.

huh, boebert voted nay.

Serious question for discussion. In the prior thread on the marathon efforts to elect McCarthy, we discussed how some of the concessions were a poison pill, as proven today. Honestly, I was surprised that it took -this- long for Gaetz and his ilk to pounce, although McCarthy had been largely appeasing the crazies to date.

Given that it’s very likely McCarthy is out, but will be the majority candidate for the Republicans on future votes for Speaker, do we think that Gaetz and kin are JUST in it for the chaos and headlines, or are angling for even more perks and veto power under future rules? Or do they -want- to hand control over to a more neutral or even Democratic speaker to more easily rile up their constituents against ‘the enemy’?

Ok, I thought the Dems were going to only vote ‘Present,’ so I was confused why there were already so many ‘Yes’ votes. But the Dems are voting ‘Yes’ to oust McCarthy. I guess we won’t know till the end of this vote how it’s going to go, but with at least 6 saying they’re going to vote with the Dems to oust McCarthy, I expect he’s toast.

Given the precedent Speaker Cannon set, the new Speaker could be

McCarthy

5 Republicans have already voted to vacate, without Democrats he’s done.

Liz Cheney has shown that she’s not a Trump sycophant; she’s willing to work with both parties; and if she’s her father’s daughter, she presumably won’t undercut aid to Ukraine (much). I wonder if enough GOP would vote for her instead of McCarthy.

Yeah, but these are Congresscritters. Acting tough is part of their deal in a way it isn’t for most barristers.

I assume this takes effect immediately? Be curious to see who picks up the gavel after the vote.

Total of 7 Rs now.

Would it be too much to ask to have a clerk who can enunciate yeas and nays so we can understand? Half the time the nays sound like ayys. Looks like he’s going down.

My understanding is that Dems could still save him, either by a bunch voting “Present” to bring the majority threshold down, or by having a few vote “No.” So far, though, they are all listening to leadership and voting to oust.

I thought this was just on Kevin’s motion to table? If he loses that, there’s still the motion on the merits. Or am I just confused? (Wouldn’t be the first time.)

ETA: looks like I’m confused:

Saint_Cad: Just to make sure I’m reading the right articles. It was the Motion to Table that failed and so now the Motion to Vacate is proceeding.

I just read that two Dems are absent today one is Bush who has COVID and the other is…Pelosi.

Regardless, if all of the Dems present vote NO, K-Mac is done.

Yes, that’s what I was implying in the first half, if they were doing this to punish McCarthy and make themselves look good in the process to their crazies, before coming back with more concessions.

The motion to table already failed. This is to kick him out.

He already lost the motion to table. This is to vacate.

I’m listening on the BBC site. She sounds clear to me. Might be a problem with your provider.
