I’ve not read the thread. Just popping in to give you my opinion.
The burgers are very, very good. Some of the best burgers in L.A. I preferred Fatburger when I was in L.A., but I had a couple in Seattle that were not as good as I remember. I would love a Double-Double. But…
In-N-Out’s fried are bad. They’re some of the worst fries I’ve had. They’re limp and greasy, and they get cold quickly. Fatburger’s Skinny Fries or Fat Fries are far superior. (I prefer the Fat Fries.)
We just had In-n-Out for dinner last night, because my brother is visiting from Costa Rica and had a craving. He went with me to a doctor’s appt that ran longer than expected, so it was almost 5:00 by the time we got there, and the drive-thru line was out the parking lot around the corner and backing up on to Sepulveda. We were out of there and home in about 15 minutes. The lines are long, but they’re really efficient.
They’re good, but SALTY. Overwhelmingly salty. When one opened in El Segundo, we went there maybe 7 or 8 times, and then never had the desire to go back. They’re perfectly fine, and I love the tempura green beans, but it’s still just an over-salted, greasy burger that usually leaves me a little queasy (even though it tastes good going down).
The mention of The Habit gave me the hankering so I went by for dinner. Two observations, 1, they no longer offer the portobello burgers and 2 I got the Char- didn’t seem any saltier than other production burgers.
It’s noticeably salitier tha In-n-Out to me. I haven’t eaten any other fast food burgers in ages. I used to like Carl’s Western Bacon Cheeseburger, but I don’t think my system would tolerate it now. McD’s and BK burgers are not even worth the cheaper price to me.
I, for one, like In-N-Out enough that I consider it worth waiting for. I mean, I don’t go there if I’m in a big hurry. I typically go like Friday after work.
When the pandemic started and restaurants were closed for indoor dining, the In-N-Out near me (which is probably the same one @snowthx mentioned earlier) started splitting the drive thru line into two lines that merge back into one before they get to the actual drive thru. Except when the lines get so long they back up past the sign telling you to form two lines, people just start lining up behind the right hand line, sometimes until it backs up into the street. When that happens I just drive around all the people in the longer line and get in the much shorter left hand line. I suppose I’m effectively cutting in front of those people, but it’s not my fault they didn’t form two lines like they were supposed to.
In-N-Out isn’t like any other burger. Animal style is the best, but when I want their food, it’s not because I’m craving a hamburger. I’m just craving that mushy, cheesy thing with caramelized onions.
I truly can’t think of any burger chain that I especially like these days. They all have too much bread for my taste. I used to love a Burger King whopper, but I can’t even remember the last time I even wanted one.
I don’t like the ‘animal style’ onions, but I love their regular onions. It’s a full slice and it’s never biting hot. Good onions.
Other than that, I like Squeeze Burgers with extra pickles. Squeeze Burgers have a halo of melted and grilled cheese around them. I don’t know what other people do with the cheese skirt, but I have to fold it up into the burger before I bite it.
