Israel has a force of 4 modern diesel-electric submarines, which are armed with very sophisticated cruise missiles, and torpedos. They also posess sophisticated target tracking and electronic countermeasures (built by IAI). Does anybody know where these subs are based, and where they patrol? I imagine they are based in the Red Sea (can’t see them of much use in the Mediterranean). Are these subs armed with nuclear weapons? Do they venture into the Persian Gulf?
One would suppose they also call it the “Silent Service”.
I’d also like to know.
Wiki says that the sub fleet is based out of Haifa. Here’s a good link on their dolphin class subs.
They are towed there by camel. Camels are the ships of the desert.
Can’t they just launch straight into the Mediterranean?
Why not? They could cover Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, etc. I don’t think they’re based in the Red Sea. Clearly, Israel has no purpose for revealing where they are at all, but my guess is that they deploy from the Med.
Israel doesn’t want to be poking around the Red Sea/Arabian Gulf, etc. That’s just asking for confrontations. And for what purpose? In the Red Sea they’d be too far away from their major sea lanes or seacoast. A diesel-electric is most useful in this situation for defending Israel from amphibious attack, or for taking sanctions as necessary to prevent delivery of unfavorable supplies to their enemies.
The subs and the rest of the Navy are mostly for defense.
Would Egypt allow the Isreali’s to sail their subs through the Suez Canal?
They literally owned it for a while.
This being Israel, I’d say any way it wants.
Israel has no nuclear weapons , they got around this by having the weapons disasembled so you would have to mate up the warhead with the cruise missile.
But other wise the subs make up the seaborne part of Israels nuclear triad mainly for the second strike portion , in case the main force gets taken out.

The legal status of the Suez Canal is governed by a special treaty, the Constantinople Convention of 1888, which seems to still be in effect. It gave every vessel of commerce or war the right of free passage through the canal, even belligerent ships in time of war. The Ottoman Empire, of which Egypt was a part at the time (formally, Britain was only a protecting nation), was a party to the treaty, so it became binding on Egypt as successor state upon independence.
It would appear that the Israeli 7th Flotilla operates out of Haifa on the Mediterranean, but the Israeli Sea Corps also has an installation in Eilat on the Red Sea, which would provide easy access to the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Do they venture there? I’d imagine they’re as tight-lipped–and probably moreso–about submarine operations as we are.
The same goes with the nuclear capabilities of their Dolphin class submarines. Its rumored that they may carry a nuclear-capable variant of the Popeye Turbo submarine launched cruise missile (SLCM). However, I am absolutely CERTAIN their policy regarding the disclosure of the presence of nuclear weapons on board any vessel would be the same as our own. You know, the entire “can neither confirm nor deny” bit.
Could they keep it secret? If they dock them at Eilat, people would presumably notice and I seriously doubt you could sneak a submarine through the Suez canal or overland to the Red Sea. I suppose you could send it around Africa to cruise the Red Sea and then all the way back around to Hafia when you wanted to dock it, but then your submarine might be thousands of miles away should a war break out and you need it.
Until Carter recently opened his mouth, they were still not saying if they had nuclear weapons at all.
