Jeopardy! - FAQs
There’s a lot to know about becoming a contestant on Jeopardy! Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions you may find helpful on your quest.
Not here. We have digital cable.
I roll sat and cable into my definition of “broadcast”. Same goes for streaming of the channels that go out on aforementioned technologies. I haven’t watched it in 14? 15? years.
Wow! You must REALLY live in the boonies!

Haha, I quit watching it after going to my first musical. TV hasn’t been able to entertain me since. Not to mention nothing on the idiot box appeals to me.
(Not to mention running browser adblockers for 10+ years makes 30 minutes of commercials per hour look absolutely ridiculous)
Modhat on: OK, if you want to talk about this, please start a different thread. Your post is bordering a little into threadshit territory and the rest is derailing the Jeopardy thread.
No warning but do not continue.
So then how do you watch Jeopardy?
I like the current champ. First 5-time winner this season!
Ouch, yeah. What a brain fart! What were the respective totals going into FJ? I suppose if she had >50% of what the two leaders did, she should have bet enough to beat their current scores by one dollar if she got it right. If she had less than half of their totals, I guess maybe bet nothing?
I watch some CBS shows (including Jeopardy) live on the CBS All Access streaming service, even though I don’t have cable or satellite.
I mean, that was his only chance to win. He needed to bet at least 1300 to keep it from being a runaway, but he he did that and lost it would still be a runaway anyway.
People placing middling bets on the 2nd DD when they’re far behind is always an poor move. If you get it right, you’re still behind, and if you get it wrong, you’re pretty much out of it.
I probably would have left myself at least a dollar, just so that I could be in Final Jeopardy–but yeah, a big bet in that situation was his only realistic chance of getting into a position to win. If he had gotten it right, we would be calling that wager “gutsy.”
In fact, I’ll go ahead and call it gutsy even though he didn’t get the answer. Not enough people seem to be willing to play to win in that situation.
Going into FJ, the two leaders each had $13,800. The 3rd place total was $6,000. She (the 3rd place contestant) had no chance of catching either leader if either one of them got the correct answer. Her only hope was that both of them would miss and bet big, which is exactly what happened. The obvious strategy (in my simple mind) was to bet nothing.

Oh, I totally agree with this. And he got his two grand regardless.
But being on Jeopardy is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You want to at least play the whole game. Like MrAtoz, I would have made sure to keep at least a dollar by the end of DJ, just because.

I agree given the score totals. But there’s always the chance one of the leaders will bet nothing. If she did have >50% of their total, wouldn’t it be better to bet just enough to beat their current score by a dollar? That would still leave some behind to win if they both bet it all and everyone gets it wrong.
I agree with that strategy. However, if the leaders are tied, what are the chances that one of them will bet nothing, hoping that the other one misses?
I don’t know, but it’s not a completely asinine strategy as long as FJ has tended to be tough lately and the category is one you don’t have a sense your opponent is aces at (and/or you don’t think you are all that strong at). I don’t know if it’s what I’d do, but it’s a viable option.
The other thing here is that in the scenario I’m talking about, it doesn’t really hurt the third-place player to do this. If they do get it right and win, they’ll get more money that way.
That’s a good point. If players A and B both have 12,000 bucks, and player C has 7,000, then player C can bet 6999 and still win if all 3 players miss…and the leaders both bet 12,000.
WTH, wrong thread
How long does it take to get test results back? Sure I got at least 35 of 50, maybe 40 if some of my guesses were right. The fact that you have to type the answers doesn’t give you much time.

Admittedly I’m using the ‘once a year online test’ experience, but it’s probably still true that you could receive an invitation to audition anytime within the next few months.
You should get a ‘now that you’ve taken the test’ generic email almost immediately. But I don’t think they ever send you actual individual results. It’s either ‘get an invitation to audition’ or nothing. And it can happen as much as a year later.
Auditions take place over Zoom:
Auditions are currently taking place in two parts via video conference. In the first round, qualifiers will take a 50-question “in-person” online test (in the same format as the Jeopardy! Test). Those who pass this round will be notified within a couple of weeks and then move on to a gameplay audition round.
In the audition, contestant coordinators will lead the group through a brief game-playing tutorial. After the tutorial, everyone will take turns playing a mock version of the game in groups of three. At the end of the mock game, each applicant will be asked to tell a little bit about themselves: likes, dislikes, career, family, hobbies, etc. The audition will last approximately one hour. (Note that you must submit your signed application at least one day before your audition date.)
Reliable internet access and a computer webcam or front-facing camera on your phone or tablet are required for the audition. You will receive an email with a Zoom video conference link approximately 30 minutes prior to the audition, which you should join at the appointed time. We suggest using a laptop for the audition, but you can also use a phone or tablet (note that you will need the Zoom app installed on your phone or tablet if you plan on using either of those).

They’ve never said exactly what constitutes a “passing” grade on the online test, but the general consensus seems to be that 35 is enough. You won’t be told whether you passed or not, or even what the correct answers are. Reddit’s Jeopardy forum tends to have threads about the online test, if you want to check your answers.
The next step, if it happens, will be that they email you inviting you to audition “in person” (although, as noted above, all those auditions are taking place via Zoom these days). That email could come the next week, or it could come months later. That’s all up to the producers.
I just finished re-watching tonight’s episode on KOMO out of Seattle. Its dismal performance reinforces my belief that they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel* to obtain contestants.
