Ya, I guess “Beta” does technically start with “beta”. I’ve certainly heard it called that rather than “Betamax”.

That’s what I was thinking too. The dates were far too early for either the Constitution or the Articles of Confederation.
I guess many people think of anything east of the Ohio River as part of the 13 Colonies. As indicated above, they probably grew up watching Daniel Boone fight the Redcoats on TV.
Getting kinda pissed off at ABC here in the Los Angeles market. My DVR is set to record Jeopardy! (which airs at 7pm, while I’m at work). If ABC preempts it for something else, they move it back to 1030 pm, and my DVR records it then. They fucked up and didn’t shift it for Monday (Monday Night Football, which by the way, if I wanted sports made available to me, I’d buy one of their goddamned sports channels). Then they fucked up again and didn’t time-shift it when the final game of the World Series got in the way.
(OT: Great year to be a sports fan in the Los Angeles market. First the Lakers take the NBA championship, then the Dodgers win the World Series. Now all we need is for the Rams to move back to St. Louis.)
Okay, time to move this thread to the Pit. Show’s not on AGAIN!
God Dammit, Channel 7! You can show the election returns any time! There’s no reason you HAVE to skip showing Jeopardy!!
James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter are going to be on a new game show for ABC called The Chase, based on a UK game show.
Is this being produced by MGP? I would think Ken at least is bound by an exclusive contract to Jeopardy!.
Maybe he’s got one of those clauses that lets him become a free agent if they don’t play him. ‘Cos I’ve seen precious little evidence that they intend to play him on a regular basis.
Didn’t James clean up on the UK version?
James was on an earlier US version on the Game Show Network.
I can understand James and Brad as free agents. But not Ken if they’re grooming him as Alex’s successor.
Maybe they’re not grooming him as Alex’s successor?
Maybe not, but that sure is the impression they were giving.
I wonder about that. All the show has ever said was that Ken was joining the staff as a “consulting producer.” All the stuff about how he’s being groomed to be Alex’s replacement has never been more than fan speculation. The show itself has never said anything like that. Certainly his on-air presence has been much less than I was expecting.
It will be interesting to watch The Chase. I was a fan of the GSN version, with Mark Labbett as “The Beast” and Brooke Burns hosting.
They did one episode with a category that was just Ken on video reading the clues, as if he was the host. Not on location or anything. At the end Alex said something like “I’d better start looking over my shoulder.”
From last night - if you knew the Peninsular War was in Spain, FJ was pretty easy. I liked the way Burt was bouncing up and down waiting for Alex to get to him.
The wording of the clue made it all pretty clear:
The first use of this Spanish term in English was by Wellington referring to partisans in the Peninsular Wars
I was hoping at least one of the contestants would write “What is gorilla?”
I knew that the Peninsular War was in Spain - I just didn’t get to the word. “Conquistadores?” no. Something about the Armada? no. When I saw “guerillas” I thought “oh yeah, that makes sense.” But I wasn’t getting there from the clues at hand.
“Guerilla” is pretty much a synonym for “partisan.”
Our idiolects don’t align.
Better go see a chiropractor.
On Wednesday (I think) the FJ clue was:
“5 U.N. member countries have one-syllable names: Chad, Laos, and these 3 in Europe.”
I got two of them right off the bat, but couldn’t think of the third. When I saw the answer, I was ashamed of myself.
