The new edition of that old favorite all purpose cookbook *The Joy of Cooking * includes a recipe for “Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic”.
The first time I ever heard of that dish was in the early 1980’s, and I’m curious as to when it first appeared in Joy. My edition is from 1953, and it’s not in there. If you’ve got a copy of Joy of Cooking, would you please check to see if it includes the recipe, and post here with a “yes” or “no” and the date of your edition?
My hubby has a 1997 edition that does have that recipe. His 1975 edition does not. However, there are several editions in between that he doesn’t have yet, so I can’t say for sure which one had it first. (he collects cookbooks.) It’s a wonderful recipe BTW.
Are you certain that there are several editions in between? I know that there were many printings in between, but I remember when the 1997 version came out, there was great fanfare about how it was the first new revision in quite a while, and how Ethan Becker was added as an author.
FWIW, I have a copy of the 1975 edition, printed in 1995, which doesn’t have the recipe, and the “new” 1997 edition, which, as noted, does have it.
I’m pretty sure my aunt made that dish for me prior to '97. I can ask her where she got the recipe if you want. (But I know she doesn’t use Joy as her main source for recipes.)
