The Klan sends mayor death threat... in crayon

Mayor Virgil Penn of Bonita, LA was the lucky winner:

(Bolding mine.) I think it means they didn’t have any red left to draw the letters in a properly ‘bloody’ fashion.

There was a time in this country when the Klan went to the highest levels. Now people who have ideas that would embarrass a preschooler have to raid kindergartens to send their death threats. We have made progress.

Just because it is signed “KKK” does not mean that any of the actual KKK organizations had anything do with it. Most likely it is some poor degenerate asshole with nothing to live for but his notions of aryan supremacy, and never intends to act on his threat. I doubt he’s even a sanctioned member.

A cynical counterpoint:

Hizzoner is in a three-way race (not really common in small towns–although clearly possible).
Hizzonner does not want the police to examine the letter for fear fingerprint analysis employing chemicals will damage it.
Hizzoner has already reported that another man tried to force him offf the road, this summer, although the other man has denied any such action. (The police believe that it is a personal feud).

Could hizzoner be writing his own death threats to encourage a sympathy vote?
Could his antagonist in the car be sending hate mail simply to rile him up?

Based on the wording of the article, it does not appear than anyone in town actually believes the Klan is responsible (although a Klannish mentality could be behind it).

I think this is an interesting anecdote that (thus far) tells us nothing about anything. The cops do not appear to be avoiding their responsibility to protect the mayor. This is a single incident, not preceded my vandalism, graffiti, or anonymous phone calls. We have absolutely no idea who wrote the note and we have no further evidence of racial hostility, so I am going to hold off expressing any opinions about racial hostility or the intelligence of evil doers.

Does he think this letter has such historixal importance that he will damage future geneations by damaging the letter?

I’m with the cynics – if he won’t haev it checked for fingerprints he probably has something to hide. Mayebe he thinks his wife or child did it?

But just to nitpick - it’s a 4-way race.

“If you run again for office in the town of Bonita, La., you will.”

Sounds like a simple statement of fact.
