The Lake Delton and Mirror Lake dam went out (June 2008)

Just throwing in my hopes that things work out and that todays predicted storms choose to veer somewhere else.

Thanks for the good wishes, but this ain’t going to happen. The dew point has been rising since yesterday afternoon and right now the clouds are very heavy. It’s not supposed to start until late this afternoon, but it looks imminent to me. I just hope it isn’t as windy as it was in last weekend’s storms. That will cause a whole lotta ugly when we are this saturated.

I’m thinking that Harmonious has another three feet before water begins to get into the upstairs part of his home (I believe he posted that earlier). Also, from his photos, he appears to be on the outer edge of the floodplain so he’s getting backwater flooding, which has minimal velocities and itsn’t as destructive. IIRC he does have flood insurance.

Is your area still doing ok, Rascal’s Mom?

Yeah, the Madison area is good, relatively speaking. However, I come from a farming community. My dad and oldest brother crop farm. My dad, in 75 years, has never had a field flooded, but this year he does. It’s neither my dad’s nor my brother’s primary source of income, which is good, but I am afraid about 90% of the farmers are very screwed this year. When I go from Madison to the village I live in about 20 miles away, there are ponds as far as the eye can see where never before have I seen standing water. I heard a weather guy say last night say that it is going to take four to six months of optimal weather for the water levels to recede in the lakes.

I know there is a poster on here that lives far, far north, and I am wondering if they are getting this.

It really makes me wonder after that phenomonally miserable winter we had, to have a spring like this…

Yeah, we were watching the news last night watching the radar and saw that the same line of storms that busted up that Boy Scout camp in Iowa is bearing down on you guys right now. I remarked that it looked like we weren’t going to get any rain and my girlfriend said “Yeah, but the Dells are screwed, look at that”. :frowning:

I have good friends in Madison, Portage and Beaver Dam, our family has a condo in the Dells and I live down stream from the Fox River so my hopes are really, really with you all.

Well, if the water is inevitable, I hope it’s at least bearable. I can’t imagine what y’all must be going through. (Seems to me the anticipation of more flooding might be worse than knowing exactly just how bad things are, but that’s just my loony opinion.)

I really do hope everyone makes it through this with as little damage as possible. hugs all around

Glad to hear things are still OK in Madison.

The farmers will suffer a large amount of damage, I’m afraid. I remember one year when the Mississippi Delta flooded; and all the catfish farmers’ ponds went under water. The fish all escaped. The highway ditches were so full of fish that people were out there with buckets scooping them up.

How devastating it would be to see your investment just swimming away like that, and so frustrating that nothing could be done about it either. :frowning:

Apparently, if one has a Multi-Peril crop insurance policy, it covers the peril of flood. Hopefully these farmers have insurance and can claim at least some of the damages.

How about NW19P ? (hope I spelled that right). Anyone heard from him?

ACtually, the headline in the Wis. State Journal today says something about crop losses being high (in the millions) and crop insurance won’t cover it (I don’t know how to link).

I just looked out my window and the sky is the same color as this background that I am typing on. The thunder is rolling through. It’s those looonnnnnng thunder booms that last about 30 seconds. Ominous.

Don’t know. Not us. Can’t worry about them now.

It’ raining. The pump for the basement with the door I sealed with a one foot bearier was able to catch up and keep it to an inch of water. I got up at 5:00 and raised the seal another 12 inches in height. I prepared another 14 inches of height to go in place in about 5 minutes. We will be unable to enter that basement at that point. There’s no reason to make it any higher, because at that point the water will be coming in the basement through vents and windows. I won’t be around in that case either. Even if I have to leave again, I prefer that the basement wasn’t flooded when we get back. i just got back with a supply and I forgot to take off my shoes before exiting the truck, so no more dry tennies. I don’t know if any update will happen again today.

The rain started in Madison in earnest about 30 minutes ago. I don’t think I’m in any danger of flooding but my best friend lost some books from water running down her driveway into the garage. Sure will be fun driving downtown today to pick up my brother at the bus station. Good timing for a visit, bro.

The middle basement pumps switch burned out. It’s not a submersible, and the water was a couple inches from the motor. That one will cause water to exit into the main basement. Ma will be here soon to go looking for a switch or whole pump. Whatever we can get.

It’s not just the farmers who are losing out here. It will soon be the rest of the country.

Early farm reports are saying crops yields would be down this year. Now the flooding across the Midwest is changing those early reports of low crops yields to no crop yields at all this year in many places.

Food prices are gonna jump.

The rain gauge is full so we had 5 inches or moire down pour. The water is up another 5 or six inces right now. The water is starting too go on Hwy 33 by the Fox river. The roads are all becoming unpassable. I’m going to be out of here real soon. This probably means the fox river bridges are currently or soon will be impassable for at least 50 miles down stream and I’m betting up stream. Our house is the highest because of our basement. The others will likely flood out morning. My last report folks. Bye.

There’s a fucking escaped dangerous presoner lose.

Tornado warnings, tornados headed in my direction. Should be here in between 5-10 minutes. I am going to seal up the house and take my dog down to the basement. I also heard something about baseball size hail. My car is in the garage.

The escaped criminal is in Columbia County, which is being hit particularly hard. Strange. He is also shackled.

Off to find cover.

good lord, folks… be safe! You’re all in my thoughts.

Good lord. I know he’s a prisoner and all, but I hope he doesn’t drown. That would be a hellish way to go.

all seems well here in the city itself (I’m on the south side, 2 blocks from the Monona Bay) but there are tornadoes everywherein South Central Wisco! definitive sightings throughout southern and eastern Dane Co, western Jefferson Co, eastern Iowa Co, and northern Rock and Green Cos. All F0 and F1 though, so nothing TOO deadly.

Flooding everywhere in the region - Grant Co, (far SW corner of state by Platteville) is pretty much entirely flooded and most roads out.

The interstate (westbound I 94) is entirely closed until further notice at Johnson Creek. I think that’s HD’s area, but not sure.

They’re using the Ducks - WWII era amphibious craft that now serve as sightseeing vessels in the Dells - as rescue vehicles throughout the region now.

There some crazy photos on the local news websites: link

And there’s an escaped criminal on the loose… good grief

Hope all the rest of you Wisco-Dopers are doing okay.

goodgordalmighty. Local TV has gone to regular programming for now, so I figured I was safe plugging my puter back in.

picker, I think HD is more north, near the epicenter, so to speak. I think. Yeah, that prisoner, he is IN Portage. The same Portage where almost every street is closed, to almost quote the news people. So to inject a little humor (when I’m not feeling much), he escapes from prison. In shackles. In a town where no one is moving. Bright bulb, that one.

And a stretch of I-94 is closed, the stretch of which you spoke, a main artery from Chicago/Milwaukee to Madison, and a major commute route for many people. The Rock River (correct?) is within feet, again, of the Interstate.

A tornado passed just to the south and east from me. I must have gotten a tip of it though. I let my guard down, had a glass of wine and a piece of deli chicken. The rain started to pick up and all of a sudden it was horizontal. I shot from my breakfast bar with my chicken still in hand, yelled for my dog who of course was two inches away from me anyway, and flew downstairs. It died down quickly, but when I came back upstairs and looked outside, I see there are leaves ALL OVER the back yard. The whole thing lasted maybe 15 seconds. And I hurt myself somehow.

It’s going to be a long night. Rascal’s brother gets done with work in 27 minutes and once he gets home, I can relax until the next wave goes through. It is going to be a long night.

My basement still has no water, but apparently we are all screwed and it’s just a matter of time.

Does anyone want to start a new thread with stuff to cheer us Midwesterners up, or at least me? You did in February when I got fired, in spades. Any takers? Please?

HD, you ARE in my thoughts.
