The Last Starfighter. Just watched it with my son and...

Some observations:

  1. Doesn’t hold up that great over time. I loved this movie as a youth but as an adult the story is so cheesy. The whole part where he is beating the record on the game and everyone from the trailer park rushes up to the see him do it in the middle of the night. It was pretty over the top.

  2. The effects didn’t hold up at all. I appreciate what they were trying to do with the limited tech back then but they would have been better off doing it like Star Wars instead of with the CGI.

  3. The love interest in the movie is still hot today. That chick was gorgeous even by todays standards. Whiny as hell though.

Anyone else seen this movie in the last 10 years or so?

I got it from Netflix. Yeah, it was totally a movie of its time, but I thought most of the effects were pretty good. Except for the bit in the asteroid - that poor rock really needed textures.

It was fun. The special features were pretty good too. The documentary about the special effects was really interesting.

I thought Tron held up much less well. The absolute obsession with arcade games made less sense for an adult than a kid stuck in a trailer park (among other issues).
