I like the purple one in the OP’s second link. It’s pretty, and it looks like actual clothes. Clear Classical influences, and a nice interplay of color and texture.
And xanthous, am I the only one who finds the concept of a Simplicity sewing pattern for an MC Hammer outfit amusing? I wouldn’t have thought there’d be much overlap between the sew-it-yourself crowd and the Hammer fandom.
These are the Winter collections! They are being shown now so clients of haute couture can order their Winter wardrobes now. Only the richest of the rich* can afford to buy this stuff; and the outfits will be tailored for them. Top too transparent? Skirt too short? All will be adjusted as madame wishes.
The models are looking as they are paid to look–each designer has a “concept” for his collection. The extreme makeup & hairdos and those silly hats are just for show. (Although their expressions might be affected by the shoes–which never really fit.) Afterwards, the girls will wash off the makeup & put on their t-shirts & jeans.
The ready-to-wear shows are closer to what we’ll see in the stores. That’s the expensive ready-to-wear–cheaper knock-offs will also appear.
Are the richest of the rich even buying as much as they used to? This was Christian Lacroix’slast haute couture show; he can’t afford to do it any more.
Haute Couture is meant as art. Art as expressed through fabric, sewing techniques, hairstyles and makeup to go with the clothing. It is not meant to be practical or even aesthetically pleasing on a person (just like Picasso’s Guernica isn’t necessarily aesthetically pleasing).
