This strip runs in my local newspaper and is unfunny to the point that I sometimes have trouble figuring out what the joke is. And yet, I still find myself digging through the archives because it’s so bad I can’t stop reading.
Some of these are reminiscent of The Far Side on one of Gary Larson’s less-funny days. Others are complete non-sequiturs. I mean, many of them have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that animals are saying them.
I must disagree with the OP here. Many of them don’t really have a joke. But some of them are somewhat funny in an interesting kind of way. There is definitely worse out there.
I found a couple of them sort of amusing. The kangaroo mom holding a birthday party in her pouch and the St Bernard being charged corkage for his flask made me smile.
Oddly enough, Cartoon #1 is pretty good, but then it’s all downhill from there.
I wonder if that was his first one? Then someone read it, thought it was funny, and gave an off-the-cuff “Heh…you should be a cartoonist” – a suggestion which should’ve been highly ignored.
The strip seems a bit juvenile but not any worse than most that are out there now. By that I mean it sucks but doesn’t stand out in its suckitude when compared to its peers.
This is what I was going to post. I don’t think “Fred Basset” even intends to be funny, frankly*. Which would make sense if it were a soap opera strip like Mary Worth or Apt. 3-G or Rex Morgan, but it’s not.
*Thus distinguishing it from strips like Mallard Fillmore, which are consistently unfunny, but which Tinsley obviously imagines are knee-slappingly hilarious. I don’t know if you have to be a drunk driver to think that or not…we don’t have a control group outside of Tinsley.
