I just finished reading this book by Mark Frost, and I was wondering what you Socialites thought of it. I personally enjoyed it; Frost has a real gift for painting vivid pictures and making interesting characters, in my opinion. I’d recommend it to any readers of fantasy.
The story involves Dr. Arthur Conan Doyle and a man who obviously is supposed to be the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, on a quest to thwart ( I love that word) a nefarious plot to make bad stuff happen to good people:D. What are your feelings?
I presume the “inspiration” character is Dr. Bell, who was a real person.
PBS is about to show four British TV shows in which Dr. Bell and A. C. Doyle solve crimes as the next four episodes of “Mystery!”. In our area, these run on Monday night.
Everyone seems to be ignoring my post in this thread, and, in this case, that is a good thing. I just read the description of “The List of 7” at amazon.com, and I see that I was wrong. This book is not about Dr. Bell at all.
I read it years ago and liked it a lot. I think I saw somewhere that Antonio Banderas has been wanting to make a film of it for years without any takers, which might be just as well. I have The 6 Messiahs and started reading it once but never picked it up again. Should I try again?
I loved the List of 7, although as other people have mentioned, I don’t remember much about it. But at the time, I was all over it – I read it in less than a week, which is remarkable for me seeing as how I’m the world’s slowest reader.
I bought The Six Messiahs as soon as it came out, but wasn’t that impressed. It was still good, but just seemed to be missing something. While the List of Seven took the basic premise and expanded on it into a really cool story, the Six Messiahs just seemed to be an idea that the author had and wanted to shoehorn his successful characters into it.
My memory’s sketchy on the basic premise as well – I remember that the basic premise is (possible spoiler?) that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based the Sherlock Holmes stories on his own real-life adventures, and based the character of Holmes on a real person he’d met. But I seem to remember a story based on the idea that Dr. Watson was the real brains of the operation, and “Sherlock Holmes” was just a figurehead. Now, is this one of the elements of The List of 7, or am I confusing it with some other story?
I don’t know if there was a story written like that, but there was a movie about 15 years ago with Michael Caine as Holmes and Ben Kingsley as Watson where that’s the situation. I think it was called Without A Clue, but I’m not positive.
SolGrundy, there was a movie,Without A Clue starring Michael Caine & Ben Kingsley based on the idea that Watson was the brains & Sherlock a front hired by Watson. Not a bad movie, either. I can’t offhand recall ever reading a story using this premise, but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if there was one.
