I saw a commercial for Meet The Spartans – a spoof of 300 brought to us by the people who made Epic Movie and Date Movie. The trailer was absolutely unwatchable; I shudder to think what the actual movie will entrail.
You don’t think that is setting the bar a little low?
It’s a Mike Myers “Mug & Grin” movie. I don’t think there is a “too low” for that bar.
It looks like a parody of Austin Powers, but starring an Indian guy…
That answers a lot of questions. I was all excited for Date Movie because I’m a fan of Alyson Hannigan. Within about 10 minutes I was in agony, but I managed to push through the pain and watch the whole thing
Then came Epic Movie, which was so otherworldy bad that I was white-knuckling the FFWD button on the remote. Just painfully, embarassingly NOT FUNNY. After the final credits rolled, and I had gone to enough therapy to get over the PTSD, I wondered what the hell happened to parodies. Didn’t they used to be funny? Now that you mention they were made by the same people, it all makes so much sense.
Looking them up on imdb, the guys who wrote and directed those pieces of crap were also writers in the Scary Movie franchise. While that franchise isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread, it’s at least got some legitimately funny bits. So I can only conclude that the Wayans brothers are freakin’ genuises as directors if they could squeeze blood from the stone that is the writing team that produced the Epic Movie franchise.
I’ll tell you one thing: I now have an undying respect for the people who made Not Another Teen Movie, which I consider actually good. Looking them up, it would appear half of them also wrote for the Scary Movie franchise, so that helps explain why those have funny parts. The other half of the writing team from NATM also wrote The Comebacks and Extreme Movie, so I’ll have to keep an eye out for those.
Except that “Indian” guy is… Mike Myers.
except that Hank and his character were, like, funny.
I was thinking “Oh, this is instead of Austin Powers 4”. you know, a spiritual successor.
Or to make the obvious pun, “Suck sessor”.
Me too. I mean, it’s still stupid, but it manages to be funny and fairly clever at the same time.
If Jessica Alba’s in it, I’m just gonna have to hold my nose and dive in.
To be fair, So I Married an Axe Murderer was funny, as was the Austin Powers Trilogy, so if you’re a Myers fan there’s no reason to think its crap- its not like he goes around appearing in any old piece of shit. And unless you’re a Britophile, Austin Powers running around saying yeah baby probably didn’t look too appealing in the initial promos.
Am I not turtley enough for you? Turtle, turtle!
Isn’t that pretty much how you have to approach every movie with Jessica Alba?
View From The Top?
Yeah, but that was really more of a cameo than an acutal Mike Myers movie- its not like he’s Sam Jackson appearing in two bad movies a month. Other than View and Cat and the Hat, he’s only done Shrek and AP the last five years.
