My unprovoked attack on Mike Myers.

What has he done thats so freakin’ great? Look up the IMDB- the only movie he has in production is Shrek3. This is the new Peter Sellars? Look back at his career- two Waynes Worlds, upstaged in both by Dana Carvey, imo. Dana Carvey!!! Ok, Austin Powers trilogy. Great, the same movie three times, in which he only plays one good character, Dr. Evil. Seriously, Fat Bastard? Goldmember? Superflous, unlikeable characters. Austin is the least funny character in these movies, to the point where he’s basically overlooked. Which brings me to Shrek: Wow. He really displays his comedy genius here, a role he only got when Chris Farrelly died. Thats gotta sting! And again, he’s outshone by Eddie Murphy in both movies, and Antonio Baderas in the sequel. Mike sits in the booth, spends a couple hours knocking out his lines in a hideous quasi-scottish accent that makes you want to puke. Hmm. Since then? Cat in the hat. AKA Shat in the hat. No further questions, your honour.

What did I miss? So I married an axe murderer. Ok, this is an alright movie, shows signs of potential, and was an original idea. Since then, its been spoofs and sequels and easy money.

Is he afraid of something? A slip into bargain basement,straight-to-rental clag like so many of his SNL co-horts?

It just burns me to hear of him as a “Comedy Genius”, especially when you see Will Ferrell busting his ass all year to little acclaim. Cant some of his undeserved fame go to Steve Carrell?

I think he’s funny.

You’ve got to be kidding. Will Ferrell has made me laugh about half a dozen times in my life, and I feel like I’ve heard hundreds of people tell me how funny he is.

By and large, I agree with you about Myers. I liked a lot of his stuff on SNL, and the Wayne’s World movies and the first Austin Powers - plus bits of the second - but he hasn’t done anything funny in years. He’s ridden the Scottish accent schtick into the ground, and it wasn’t really funny anyway. Even the good things about Austin Powers degenerated into repetitive junk for the most part.

Who compared him to Peter Sellers?

He’s a little annoying, but I loved Austin Powers, the movie and the character.

But I agree Will Farrell is funnier both as himself and in most characters he plays.

You had me nodding in agreement until I reached the end and saw the remarks about Will Ferrell. Busting his ass? To little acclaim? What?

He plays the same frenetic idiot in every movie he’s in and is considered one of the better comedic actors working now amongst my peer group and demographic.

I can’t fucking stand him

Around the release of Goldmember: Everyone. Even co-stars Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg came out with guff like " He’s a Genius".

Seemingly, playing multiple roles in a movie is enough to get you put on the same pedestal as one of the all time greats.

I was just making a point about the more recent SNL alumni. Ferrell works damn hard. You don’t hear people claiming he’s the new Steve Martin. Shit, even Jimmy Fallon works harder than Mike Myers, although he sucks too.

He made one of my all time favorite comedies: So, I Married an Axe Murderer.

But I do like that movie.
Whats he done lately?

I cannot stand Mike Myers, and I’m actually a little happy to see I’m not the only one with that unpopular opinion. He’s always so smug and cutesy, always mugging for attention like the annoying kid in high school drama class, far worse than Jim Carrey on his worst day. Unlike Carrey, Myers has shown no potential for dramatic roles (anyone see that piece of trash 54?), and his comedies are formulaic sequels and franchises that only go for the easiest laughs, usually aimed at young and generally indiscriminating audiences. I admit his Dr. Evil character is really funny, and I liked his beat poetry in Axe Murderer, but that’s it.

That said, I usually like Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, and their whole crew a lot, and I even thought Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz were good together on Saturday Night Live (but I haven’t seen any of their movies). I’ll take any of them over Myers. Hell, I’ll take Chris Tucker over Myers. DO YOU HEAR THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH?

I recall Dennis Miller comparing him to Sellers at the premier of the last Austin Powers flick.

That’s dismaying. Couldn’t they have at least said it after a funny movie came out? The best laughs in that thing were in the opening sequence, which didn’t even have Myers in it! In fact, those were almost the only laughs…

And they’d better not start. If Will Ferrell ever writes a play, or a few books that are as good as Martin’s work…

I’m sorry, I can’t even finish that thought. I have absolutely no idea what I would do if that happened. Dying of shock would probably be involved somewhere.

I would take Myers over Ferrell in half a heartbeat. I thought Ferrell was pretty funny in some of his SNL stuff, but his movies to this point in time have made my head hurt. (There was only ONE good scene in the entirety of Anchorman - it’s the one you’re thinking of - and I spent the rest of the movie thinking, “are the people around me laughing because they think this is funny, or is this all some kind of weird joke they’re playing to make me feel stupid?”)

More to the OP, I liked Myers in pretty much all of the stuff that was mentioned, to one degree or another (with Wayne’s World and Axe Murderer on top, probably). They are the type of movies that I will stop and watch if I am flipping channels, 'cause they hold up pretty well and are still pretty funny. To each his own.

Outshone by Eddie Murphy? You’re calling that a slam on Mike Myers? Apart from a penchant for choosing a lot of really bad movies to do, Eddie Muphy is pretty funny.

And I second that Will F. doesn’t get a lot of acclaim mainly because he, well, is kind of annoying.

Myers can be funny; he’s just not as funny as he thinks he is. Austin Powers would probably work very well as a series of 5 minute sketches, but 3 movies? C’mon…

He also does that really irritating bit where the girl falls for him although he’s a fat irritating git because he’s, well, really nice and funny inside. I know Wayne’s World and AP aren’t exactly documentaries, but Tia Carrere and Elizabeth Hurley are going to fall for his inner charms? Smacks of a colossal ego.

He’s got this dreadful penchant for recycling material, too: the “wire scene” kung-fu fight in WW2 was pretty funny. So he repeats it in AP3.

Verdict: not totally unfunny, but smug and lazy. Needs better writers and more discipline, and probably better suited to sketch shows than movies - somethng along the lines of British shows like Alas Smith And Jones or The Fast Show. Must try harder, but probably won’t.

Austin Powers was probably the most disappointing movie I’ve ever seen in my life. The premise was really promising, apart from the conflation of two incompatible types (the suave, James Bond-style secret agent, and the frilly, foppish, Carnaby Street pop star), but the movie itself was rubbish. If you must have fart jokes, at least make up some new fart jokes.

There are no new fart jokes.

OK, I’ll bite. Which scene?

I happen to like this movie, and have it as a go-to when I need a mindless giggle to distract me, so I have no idea which scene you’re talking about.

Are you kidding me? Ben Stiller is much worse than Mike Myers. He’s a two trick pony: a likeable schlub or a pretty boy jerk. Then there’s Starsky and Hutch, or Meet the Fockers. Did ya get the joke in the title, cause it was the funniest and most original thing about the whole film.

Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz? Well, at least they think they’re funny.

Will Ferrell and Mike Myers are starting to be about equal in my eyes. Mike Myers was easily funnier on Saturday Night Live. I’ll take Lothar of the Hill People over the Cheerleader skits any day. As for the movies, Mike Myers has made some crap but Will Ferrell seems to be skating on the same clueless boob schtick for every movie he’s been in. Sometimes it works. Most of the time it doesn’t.

I’m also in the minority on this board when it comes to Anchorman. I liked it, too. I’m not sure which scene Kiros is talking about, but I think I laughed the hardest at the banter between Farrell and Applegate at the anchor desk. When Farrell’s character said, “I’m going to punch you in the ovary”. The line itself is amusing, but the subdued delivery made it funnier.

But, then I also liked Joe Dirt. YMWillV.

Disclaimer: I’m not one of those sheep who have to see every stupid movie that comes out. I hated Napoleon Dynamite (I only watched it to see what the fuss was about) and I have no intention to watch Dukes of Hazard or anything other TV show or movie that’s been remade because everyone in Hollywood has run out of ideas. When my aunt was visiting us a couple of weeks ago, she mentioned that she like Snow Dogs and I wanted to kick her out of my house.

Oh yeah, Mike Myers. I liked the Austin Powers movies, but mostly becuase of the Fat Bastard and Dr. Evil characters. His Austin Powers character was annoying. I like the Shrek movies and So I Married an Ax Murderer, but if he does that Scottish accent in anything else, I may have to ax murder him myself.

As an aside, how does one distinguish between Will Farrell and Jimmy Fallon? I think they are both on fairly equal footing, but when I mentioned to my brother that I wanted to see Fever Pitch, he went off on a violent tirade about Fallon being an unfunny asshole. Yet, he’s a fan of Will Farrell. I’m confused about that because I don’t see much of a difference.
