Oh shit, I’m sorry I watched that! I haven’t read the book and now I know who the murderer is. Unless it’s revealed at the very beginning of the book/movie, people should know that the trailer is one HUGE FRICKIN’ SPOILER! The entire movie, from beginning to end, it laid out there in the trailer. I’ll of course see the movie, because it’s Peter Jackson, but this is the kind of trailer where people will say “I just watched the trailer, why do I have to see the movie?”
I should have known better. Dammit.
My sister is reading this book, and damn, that movie looks good!
Why the FUCK did they do that?
Looks great! I read the book a few years ago and didn’t know there was a movie coming out.
Rant regarding the spoiler thing: What is it with movie trailers these days? It seems like every trailer practically gives away the whole movie. By the time you go to see a comedy, you already know all the funny lines by heart. For a movie like this, you already know who the killer is. Just the other day after watching a trailer my husband commented, “Well, I guess we don’t need to see that movie now,” since the whole plot had been laid out for us. I hate that!
A good movie shouldn’t rely on a spoiler (not that I even know if it IS a spoiler). It’s about the journey not about the destination, remember.
The trailer looks fantastic and the buzz for this movie has been pretty good. I REALLY hope it’s playing at the Toronto Film Fest this year…I’m not sure I can wait until december.
Book summaries in fly leaves are the same way; I won’t read more than a line or two, especially mysteries. A friend in the publishing business told me that most people like to be told what they’re going to read before they read it, and I guess the rationale for trailers is the same.
:dubious: I just don’t get it.
It’s been awhile since I’ve read it, but if I remember correctly the identity of the killer is never a secret…you know that from almost the very beginning. The story is what happens in the aftermath.
Can’t wait to see this.
That’s what I was going to say. IIRC, the identity of the murderer is out in the first few pages. It isn’t a detective story.
Admittedly, I didn’t like the book. But I wouldn’t have thought it filmable even if I had liked it.
And looking at the trailer, it seems that they’ve shifted the focus of the book to make it into a film. Shifted it quite a bit.
I read a summary of this book (actually think I might have heard it on NPR, come to think of it) and thought it sounded really great. So I love the idea.
But then I got the book and I absolutely hated the way it was written. I can’t remember specifics, but I remember hating the “voice” it was written in, and I vaguely recall thinking the book’s version of heaven sounded dreadful. I gave up within 100 or so pages, which I never used to do back then.
But since the plot was so cool, maybe it’ll be a great movie. The rare story works far better on screen.
Edit: Watched the trailer:
-Eh, could go either way
-Peter Jackson looks malnourished, and just like the guy who played Merry
-Susan Sarandon is playing a grandma now?
