If your Facebook is boring, you need to find friends who are more interesting.
Yeah, you need to work on customizing your feed. If any application “news” pops up, I immediately hide it. The first time I saw someone’s Farmville update, I clicked on “Hide all Farmville” and I haven’t seen another one.
This is what’s on my newsfeed right now:
Pictures from a childhood friend’s launch party for his new business, which I was excited to see because he’s always doing interesting things
Headlines from Global Post, Newsweek, The Onion, Scientific American, Skeptical Inquirer, and my local newspaper
Posts from the people who do some of my favorite podcasts, letting me know that they’ve been loaded onto iTunes and some comments about current events
The Daily Show, letting me know who’s on tonight
About four or five witty and/or interesting comments from close friends & relatives
That’s it. I’ve whittled it down so that I see no apps and I have no annoying people posting stupid stuff (I hide those fools). If someone makes a rude or crazy comment on something I’ve posted, I delete it. If I suspect they might do that again, they’re blocked from seeing my posts. I have an iron fist on Facebook.
Maybe I didn’t state it clear enough…my fault. There are some people that I’ve reconnected with that we’ve actually gotten together and interacted in person, and some people that it’s just nice to know what they are up to without having to pick up a phone, send and email or interrupt their lives in any way. Yes, I like that I don’t have to take an active role in following up with several hundred people on a regular basis to stay in touch.
