Was there really such a ship found under full sail in the Atlantic with no crew? Or, is this folk lore, like visions of the "Flying Dutchman’s ship? - Jinx
This is a true story, but has been somwehat embellished over the years.
Go to the gutenberg web site and download a book about it. I know Cecil has writen on the subject in his columns. This is a monthly question on this board.
He’s not Cecil, but here’s a Straight Dope Staff Report by SDSTAFF John Corrado : What really happened to the Mary Celeste?
It is not that hard to imagine how such a thing could happen. A guy falls overboard, two more drown trying to get him, another tosses them a rope and so on. Unusual, but not really impossible.
Get a copy of Clive Cussler’s The Sea Hunters II . He tells the history of the ship and the story of finding its remains. Interesting to find that after all the history of the ghost ship, it was sunk by someone attempting fraud.
It sounds like a Monty Python skit where the remaining crew end up arguing over who gets to eat whose leg.
