The Matrix Phone..I want it but can I use it?

Well I finally figured out what phone that was from the Matrix. The ever ultra cool Nokia 8110. Now that I have been questing to discover what it was, I now find to my horror that they are not sold in the US! Only in Austrailia and other countries because of the power of it.

Now I am not saying I am gonna do it, but is it possible for me to use one of these within the US. Why can I not? Any techies out there with any ideas why I cannot?

Tyler Durden: You are not your job. You are not the money in your bank account. You are not the car you drive. You are not how much money is in your wallet. You are not your fucking khakis. You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

All I know is that the US uses a different system for mobile telephones. I can’t use my Ericsson phone in the US, whereas it works fine all throughout Europe and Asia.

I think it is Motorola who make the only “3 band” mobile phone, which works in Europe, Asia AND the US.

I thought you meant the phones they all got slurped into when escaping the “Agents.” Once I was able to ignore the phenominally bad science of the matrix, The Matrix turned out to be one of the best movies I’ve seen in quite a while. I’m just glad we made a Blockbuster run while we were stuck in the ofice Y2K eve or we’d have been bored out of our skulls.

A friend of mine who works for Nokia assures me that there will be an 8110 released into the US market later this year.

If you find out that it does work, make sure you get the 8110i. See http://nokia-asia.com/ap/nokia_8110i_all.shtml for details - from the research I did I only found it in Asia, but it could be available in Australia as well.
My question is: why aren’t they marketing it as the “Matrix” phone? Talk about wasted potential…

Yeah, I want one of the 8100 series too. They are bad ass. I only know about PCS systems, so this may not be a lot of help if you use a cellular carrier. There are basically 3 frequencies used for transmissions in PCS type systems, and the same frequency is used uniformly over a whole continent. There are several variations in equipment/ technology within each bandwidth, used by competing companies to keep their customers from using the others’ services. Australia uses a different radio frequency to transmit wireless (PCS) calls than North America. I suspect there may be a dual mode module available or in the works, but that will bulk up the phone and make it less cool. It will also be complicated by trying to find which company’s technology is supported by the module if it exists - GSM, TDMA, CDMA?

In short I wouldn’t recommend it unless you get a gig in Australia and can be there enough time to actually use the phone and just bring it home as a souvenier. I’ll keep an eye out for them to show up here eventually, as there seems to be some demand.

They probably aren’t marketing it as the “Matrix” phone for a couple reasons:

  1. It’s not available in the US yet.
  2. The studios are probably demanding lots of dough for use of the “Matrix” name.
