The McRib is back!

When I was in school, on rare occasions the cafeteria would serve a sandwich that was very similar, if not identical to, the McRib. I remember those being really good. It was a rare treat when those showed up on the menu. But like a said earlier, I thought the McRib was only OK when I tried one last week (although I know comparing a school cafeteria item to a McDonald’s meal isn’t quite an apples-apples comparison). Did I change? Is it possible the school cafeteria sandwich was actually superior to the McDonald’s version? Did the ones I had in school only seem good because I was comparing them to other school cafeteria fare? Ok, perhaps the answer to that is obvious.

Sadly no McRib in Canada. I did sign a Change.org petition to get them going in Canada, but I doubt that will go anywhere.

Similar to the McRib, Subway’s rib patty sub is very comparable. I get it on their Italian bread with just red onion and BBQ sauce. But unfortunately those are no longer available in my area (British Columbia).

Yea, I found a nearby spice shop and already got my delivery. I tried it on pizza and wasn’t thrilled. Will try it on fries on Jan. 1 and report back. Brand is Chook

What, pray tell, is a “freezer shop”, please.

A shop where a large quantity of the food for sale in it was frozen. Most famous would be Iceland. Smaller independent ones exist too, the bargain end being super cheap end of best before date items. I can’t recall seeing many when visiting the US, but I rarely ever saw a Taco Bell either, so I can’t saw I went far and wide.

Not being from the UK, I’m still confused about the term “freezer shop”.

From your link, frozen is only one category of the options for sale, along with fresh fruits and vegetables, salads, bakery, cupboard items, household items, and liquor.

I remember the McRib being really good last year, so I got the 2 for $6 promotion yesterday to eat one immediately and save one for later. I don’t know if it’s my specific store but they barely put on the BBQ sauce, which really makes the rather bland meat stand out. To me the BBQ sauce makes everything, and pulling it out of the container normally you’d see a giant mess of BBQ coming out the sides but these ones were relatively clean.

Anyone know if it’s just my store or did McDonalds put out a general order to skimp on BBQ sauce this year?

The amount of sauce should be the same everywhere. McD’s uses dispensers that ensure condiments are applied uniformly.

I’ve gotten two this year (my normal yearly quota). They did seem to me to be a bit lighter on the sauce then I remember from years past, but just a bit - they were both still smothered.

I went to the same drive-thru both times, and the sauce amount (as well as the amount of pickles and onions) varied quite a bit. This is always the case, so it all depends on the preparer.

I recall making a similar comment about the tartar sauce in a Filet O Fish thread some time ago.

Lol, I’m stealing this.

Both of the franchises I go to are putting plenty of sauce on them. At least they’re kind enough to include enough napkins!

I can no longer eat them without thinking, “Think smaller, and more legs.”

Probably about 60% of the shop items are sold from freezers in the case of Iceland, much much higher than any normal supermarket. Which typically does about 5-10% of their produce in a freezer.

I can’t recall US shops having a significant amount of freezer space either, closer to the UK supermarkets, so why the confusion?

People shop there to buy things from a freezer for their freezers. It sells other stuff, but you’ll find far better selection of alcohol, fresh food and tinned food from anywhere else, except a perhaps a corner shop.

No confusion, just curiosity. A google search on “freezer shop” returns places one can buy freezers. Is it a UK specific term? A regional term within the UK? Or just a term that you personally use?

I got one yesterday. It was good, but holy cow, was it messy! The onions and pickles slid right out, even before the patty started to move.

I can confirm that it is not for sale in Wolverhampton, UK, and nobody seemed to have heard of it. Their computerised ordering screens did not list it.

I just need to say that I’ve had a couple more McRibs over the last week (each from the same McD’s) and they are back to normal. I wonder if there were some standards issues at that particular restaurant (which is a very new one) that they corrected, because the taste, texture, sauce have been perfect. I wished I’d ordered a 2nd both times.

When I first had one like 4-5 years ago, I thought it was really tasty. I had one again yesterday and gross! Bland and not at all like I remembered. Will not be giving it another try.

Thanks to this thread, I tried a homemade ‘rib’ sandwich using On-Cor Barbecue Sauce & 6 Boneless Rib-Shaped Patties a week ago.
It was edible but not great. The patties are clearly low quality with pork, chicken and textured soy protein the leading ingredients. They don’t taste like pork and certainly nothing at all like pork ribs and awfully small. The bun I was able to find locally was probably the wrong proportion and too bready. The onion and pickles definitely bolstered that bland patty. The sauce was sort of interesting. It didn’t seem smokey and had notes of pumpkin spice or gingerbread.

I ate three of the the rib-shaped patties the night I cooked them (one sandwich, two standalone) and put the rest in the fridge for later. A week and a day passed without any temptation and I pitched the rest yesterday. Just not good.
