Anyone got any good examples? I’ve realized the full extent of this garbage, and it is omnipresent. I was never not aware of it, but man the full extent is insane, they don’t inform they distort worse than a rabid political booster.
First example that comes to mind is the Chantae Gilman case, you remember the “woman rapes man” case from Seattle? Woman breaks into guys house while he is sleeping and holds him down when he wakes and rapes him.
Wow what a babe, that dude must be gay to kick her out of bed right? <Sarcasm if you can’t tell.
It’s not really all that funny even if she is totally hot. I think a lot of guys imagine it would be fun to wake up to find a mysterious babe fucking them, but that’s because you can’t be genuinely surprised by your own fantasy. The reality of finding an aggressive, apparently insane stranger in one’s bed would be an unpleasant shock.
Kinda the anti-aceplace if anything really, I want examples of distortion.
One very good thing about online news stories that allow comments, in among the trash there is often someone explaining the real story or pointing out obvious omissions.
Local to me media periodically gets people riled up with a story about “US deporting criminals to T&T” and not once in the story mentioning the pertinent fact these criminals being dumped were illegal immigrants who are citizens of this country. Doesn’t fit with the narrative they for whatever reason want to put over on people.
Fat rapist chicks are the puppet masters behind the mainstream media. Wake up sheeple! That’s why I only get my news from reputable places like Fox News and Breightbart.
If you think I hold any other position you’re wrong, my point was they cherry picked a picture knowing people with stupid opinions would react that way.
Although this is a tabloid, I doubt they did it on purpose. I can’t imagine a news outlet pushing an “it’s ok the be raped of the person is attractive” agenda. The headline itself starts worth “240 lb woman…” and they repeat it in the article and photo captions. The more flattering photo is from her Facebook page, standard procedure these days for news outlets to put that with articles, and people’s Facebook photo is going to be the best photo possible.
Eh a washed out minor actor on a Star trek show had her mugshot up right fast, along with an obvious old pic of her in costume from the show.
Remember the birther crap with Obama? Mainstream media articles were light on details, you had to dig and dig or find a message board with intelligent posters to even find the fact that the claim was ultimately based on a since amended law that didn’t even apply.
But lets give time to the controversy instead.
I may have to off myself for giving it any publicity, but there is a website called “American News” that specializes in ridiculous media distortion. I’m only aware of it because of a relation who likes everything it posts on Facebook, so it shows up on my feed.
Basically, they take something mundane (and often out of date), like Michelle Obama discussing the fact that she wasn’t named best camper at summer camp when she was a kid because she swore too much, and match it with a headline like “You won’t believe what Michelle Obama said”, along with a couple paragraphs about how horrible she is.
It’s typical click bait glurge, so maybe it isn’t what you are asking for, but the links in the article are never what the headline (or the scant commentary) reflect, and it’s painfully obvious that they are just trolling for knee jerk right wing reactions.
What saddens me is that any person with even a shred of common sense could google the stories, or actually read the source material, and discover that this is ridiculously over-the-top. Critical thinking skills are sorely lacking among those who read such nonsense, however.
The media lies on an incredibly mundane level where there isn’t even any real selling point, its merely a habit for them.
Yesterday - 15th Sept 2015 Chris Evans was running his morning radio show, during part of which he may comment on unusual newspaper items.
Turns out Chris himself is quite newsworthy because he’s been chosen to present Top Gear - which you will no doubt see next May when it gets aired.
At the moment there is speculation who his co-presenters are going to be - the latest media bullshit is that Radio DJ Zoe Ball has formally agreed, and according to the media this is absolutely certain.
Seems this is news to Chris Evans, what would he actually know? after all, he is only one of the people right at the centre of the story and actually knows who is definitely being sought.
So Chris Evans went on to painstakingly comment on every one of those complete shit newspaper reports and shoot every one of them down - and he did this live on his show.
This is not exactly world shattering news, but it does demonstrate just how much the media simply invent stories that just do not exist, by the way Zoe Ball also confirmed that she has not been approached too.
The result is that the same media that printed this bullshit news are now printing the story that its not true, and dressing it up as more news - when in fact it was never news in the first place,- just a media manufactured filler for a slow news day
Now if the newspapers are prepared to invent a story out of whole cloth on a subject as trivial ad who will present Top Dear, just think of how much they will invent, spin and lie over something more fundamental.
To get an idea of just how much, take a look at the media treatment of Jeremy Corbyn, who has been elected as the leader of the Labour party - he is seen as left wing, and is something that is absolutely anathema to the media owning classes - does it surprise you that not one positive story has been presented in the mainstream newspaper media - and it will continue on and on, with the aim of telling you what your opinion should be of this politician - there will never ever be honest reporting of him in those media outlets.
This is a relatively new thing–click bait, as you note yourself, geared toward online advertising–and doesn’t really go to the heart of the OP’s point.
The media distort (we can leave alone the very loaded and complex term lie) primarily by focusing inordinately on some things and ignoring or downplaying others.
But what are they distorting? They’re distorting the public’s perception of the world, which can have far-reaching political and social consequences. It doesn’t have to be a specific case, as the OP seems to be so upset about.
Well, let’s not forget the Duke lacrosse case. That was a media feeding frenzy until it turned out to be bullshit, and then it suddenly vanished almost overnight from the media’s collective yaps.
Or how about Tawana Brawley? Another media feeding frenzy until that turned out to be bullshit as well.
You obviously don’t get it then, they lie and distort this story, and that can be demonstrated, yet they do it over something so trivial - its just a habit
The question you ask yourself is, just how much more and to what extent are they going to lie and distort over a serous and important issue.
Basically you can’t trust them in any story, important, or not - don’t ever think you are able to judge it for yourself, don’t ever think you can pick out the bones of truth and use your logic to sort out where they are lying and where they are not, they lie all the time and on everything.
