Yes. I am. Also what is with the “theoretically”? Under my limited understanding, that is how it is. You are hispanic. I am not. You get the job.
Cool! Can I beat your dog and rape your daughters too? Will you send me your bank information so I can access your account? You are white after all and I’m just a po’ hispanic boy from mehico…I deserve, don’t I? And of course you have ‘other prospects’ also.
Just how far are you willing to take this guilt trip? I wonder if you’d be so resigned if you ever lost a job you were more qualified to do to someone who was less…but had darker skin than you did.

Finally, to me at least its insulting…to think that you, white as you are, must graciously step aside so that me, unworthy hispanic I am can get a job is, frankly, a slap in the face. And you have ‘other prospects’, ehe, while I must beg for your charity or go back to the ghetto with my 'manos?? Well, that put me in MY place I can assure you.
This is one of the big reasons I resent the hell out of liberals in fact…while claiming to want to help minorities and ‘the people’ they really just want to feel superior. And were I black I’d be even MORE insulted than I already am. The implicatoin of all these quotas is that minorities are helpless babies who must be cared for and granted special rights or else they will never be anything…are in fact incapable of doing anything for themselves and must be helped. !!

It is not a “guilt trip” It is just that it seems like some people need to be forced to employ people from outside their race. I would rather have a situation where those in power were color-blind, but we don’t have to many, and many middle managers have no problem with hiring unqualified cronies of theirs.
I think we are moving to color blindness without quotas…in fact, I think quotas and other things like this that are inherently biased and unfair makes the progress to color blindness SLOWER than it would otherwise be. I’m unsure if they were ever that effective in the first place since they caused a lot of resentment which further exacerbated race relations IMO (and still do), but whether they were or were not in the past they are no longer needed today. We as a society have mostly moved beyond that, and there are other recourses a minority can use if he/she has been blatantly discriminated against…not least of which is we can simply take our services elsewhere. Its not perfect of course, but it IS a lot better…and getting better every year.

I respectfully disagree.
Based on what? Personal experience? Do you suppose that if the tinkering hands of the government were lifted, and quotas were completely dropped today that companies would suddenly divest themselves of minorities? Or that they would not hire qualified minorities in the future? Do you see the US going back to the 50’s or 60’s but for the noble effort of the US government and the liberals steadfastly holding back such a regression??

Guys, guys, guys, let’s not turn this into yet another debate about the merits of AA.
In the context of this thread, the debate should be: Is AA a plus or a minus for the Democrats? If it’s a minus, is that because of the message itself, or how that message is packaged? As I said earlier, I think AA is a pig, and you can put as much lipstick and as many frilly dresses on that pig as you want, and most Americans still just see a pig.
Good point John…my appologies for the hijack.
I think its a minus for the Democrats overall, though there are still many who think its the center piece of their philosophy. We’ve moved on for the need for such a beast (assuming it ever was the best way to go about doing what needed to be done), and I think most American’s realize it. We won’t be going back to the attitudes of the 50’s or 60’s again with reguard to minorities…that particular genie is firmly out of the bottle now and we are moving on to other things.

The mental image is of a person who thinks they know better than others, what is best for them.
I think that was a very well written OP. If the left would adopt and push positions so advocated, I think it would do them well. I compeltely disagree with virtually everything layed out in the OP, but it is well written.
I just want a political party that will leave me the hell alone, both socially and economically.
Such a party, on the right or left, has never, and will never, be elected in these United States.
