Back to the OP - I hope for the best, but fully expect the worst. I have an estranged step-father who kept insisting he’d “do his own research” and comply once “it was fully tested and out of the experimental stage.” He’s been down with COVID twice, once the OG strain, and once Omicron, and the last time spent a week in the hospital.
We have (like most people) long since concluded that ‘own research/non-experimental’ was code for ‘approved by whatever individuals I have decided to trust regardless of actual qualifications’. Since one of his other step-sons is a MD, but like myself, liberal leaning, their direct experience and expertise did not apply.
