Somehow, I’m sure we could come up with a poll to make our own map. Maybe Zeldar will help… Some of the shows on the map aren’t even familiar to me after I look them up!
Huh, I would have guessed “Bewitched” for Connecticut, although according to Wiki, it’s slightly ambiguous about whether they live in Westport or in New York state.
They never say it, but there are some hints. For example, it appears to be somewhere where it rarely, if ever, snows, and it’s within driving distance of the Grand Canyon.
It is performed in New York, but it’s not necessarily “set” there.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, NoClueBoy, but the only thing I can think of that might help is to use the IMDb search function for “filming location” and go state-by-state and focus on TV shows. Here’s the Tennessee example:
Woohoo! I was hoping for Justified when I clicked the map, and was not disappointed. It should get bonus points for being about Kentucky in a way that few shows use their settings.
It’s only in it’s third season, but “Grimm” would be a better choice for Oregon than “Eureka”. And “Portlandia” beats both shows in terms of impact on pop culture.
Bewitched is definitively set in Westport, Connecticut regardless of what Wikipedia says. There are references to the New England region and New York state isn’t in New England but Connecticut is.
But Designing Women was a show that was set in Atlanta and dealt with the issues of 4 independent women dealing with the changing attitudes of that region.
I dislike Seinfeld over many better choices like Lucy, Honey Mooners, Dick Van Dyke Show, All in the Family, Taxi, Barney Miller, Night Court, NYPD Blue, etc.
I guess for my home state I’ll have to be OK with Sopranos. Not really any others as popular and I did love the show. are there any Jersey shows not about criminals or people like House?
I guess the Uncle Floyd show wouldn’t work, I feel like we should be able to claim the Daily Show with Jon Stewart but that is filmed in Manhattan.
How could they go with The Brady Bunch for California? I know it is a really well known show but it seems like their would be dozens of more popular shows more associated with California?
Was Bonanza really more popular than CSI? I’m not a fan of either show but seems odd.
Is Parks and Recreation bigger than One Day at a Time that I think was on the air for over 10 years?
Will & Grace helped change how many people think about gays. Far more socially significant (and a lot funnier) than the mediocrity that was Seinfeld. The Cosby Show also helped break down racial barriers and again a far better choice for NY. Even Sex and the City which was just a better show would have been fine. Or All in the Family.
Roseanne presented a working class family in prime time, at a time when that kind of depiction was rare. A far better choice than a horrible show like Married With Children.
At least they got Frasier, Northern Exposure and the Mary Tyler Moore Show right.
Actually I’m surprised it’s as decent as it is, since they actually name shows before 1990 (a rarity in internet land). But NY (“I Love Lucy” is the most watched and influential show of all time) makes little sense, Arizona should be “Alice” over “Medium”, the low rated “Parks and Recreation” gotta be behind “One Day at a Time” for Indiana, and whoever stiffed “Gunsmoke” for Kansas should be drug tested immediately and/or shot by Marshal Dillon. And why the “reality” show American Pickers for Iowa? By that criteria, we should be able to put talk or news shows for the other states.
