I doff my cap to you, sir, for handing over the keys and letting your sis win
Your tale reminds me of a night I had, as a nineteen year old, with two mates. One of them was alone in his house as his folks had gone on holiday. We were good friends with a lot of history so we ‘knew’ that us 3, 3 bottles of wine, 3 four packs of beer, some herb and 2 bottles of tequila would (of course!) not cause any problems.
The next morning we awoke and remembered we’d all thrown up in the kitchen sink, which was full of dishes. Nothing. I repeat NOTHING would get any of those chunks down the plughole and said friend’s parents were arriving later that day. We had to excavate, with bare hands and puke still matting our hair, all of the contents so his parents wouldn’t suspect foul play. Since then I’ve treated tequila with the respect it deserves.
At one banquet I had the equivalent of two bottles of wine, possibly more. The next morning I felt fine, though I didn’t drive. Every wine was Grand Cru or equivalent, though.
There was a night in the Navy when I was still in ‘A’ school. We headed into Wisconsin where the drinking age was only 19. I was 18 but borrowed a 19 year old’s ID. We got into a drinking contest. I drank at least 16 shots and maybe as much as 20. See I don’t remember anything after #14 which was a Tequila. It was stupid, myself an the other young idiot that lasted that long threw-up all the way back to Great Mistakes and I threw up the rest of the weekend. I probably should have had my stomach pumped to be honest. I have need come close to that level of drinking again in my life.
Yes and no. On that night I knew I was near my limit and challenged with a black berry brandy hoping it would end the contest but my opponent handled that sugary crap without problem and made tequila the next drink. But I have had other bad experiences with tequila besides that night where any alcohol at that point had to be a bad idea.
I’ve gotten hangovers from only 3 tequilas and normally I have to really over drink to get a hangover so I tend to avoid it altogether now.
That made me almost spit out my red wine, very funny. It also reminded me of the time I was in London and asked a couple of cops where I could find a bathroom to use. The ‘cool’ thing was I had more junk on me and in me than they knew, but it was New Year’s Eve and we were all happy-go-lucky at that time.
Hmmm…I remember in my first year of Uni (18 or so) finishing off almost all of a 750 ml bottle of Bundaberg by myself (57% alcohol content if memory serves)
When I was working two of us finished:
a) 1 litre of Beam black label
b) 750 of baileys
c) 750 of Butterscotch Schnapps -
I didn’t drive, I cycled home, as the roads had a steep camber I cycled down the centre line so I wouldn’t fall down.
I recently went through a very interesting period in my life.
I lost my job, my house was being repossessed, my cat died, and then my wife died.
My doctor prescribed some benzodiazapines to help with the anxiety and depression.
Unfortunately, he didn’t warn me that abruptly ceasing the dosage would have negative side-effects.
Benzo withdrawal caused me to binge-drink.
I drank 750 ml of good tequila in about 4 hours, passed out, woke up about 4 hours later and said, “Wow, I sure could use a drink. Do you have any tequila?”
That works out to about 17 shots in about an hour or so.
Given my body weight (185#), I probably should have been hospitalized.
I am much better now, in case anyone wonders. Benzos are really weird medications.
The most I’ve had to drink in one night was pretty varied, so I went with other. My older sister took me drinking on my 21st birthday but it was pretty light (I had a total of 4 drinks over the course of the evening two fruity mixed drinks, a shot of tequila and a beer, though I don’t remember what type.)
The next year, for my 22nd, she decided she had gone too easy on me and so she took me out and I had (that I can remember and in no particular order): two or three beers, two glasses of wine, some pear-flavored thing, a martini, a shot of jagermeister, a shot of Bailey’s, two other mixed/layered shots and a caipirinha. It was the only time I’ve ever had even nearly that much to drink and the only time I’ve ever gotten sick from drinking; I have the sneaking suspicion that the two facts are connected.
