The movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Yeah, and when you end up in front of a Senate hearing you won’t be laughing anymore

Two-thirds of her remarks were tributes to those killed in the attacks. I don’t see anything in the speech that appears to me to be a comment on “why she was not to blame at all.” What are you referring to?

He was killed because he was friends with your ex-wife? You might have over-reacted.

But the movie is what convinced you that this happened, yes?

Or did you believe this happened before you saw the movie?

Is the movie going to convince people who were on the fence about Hillary that she did what you allege above? Because it seems that nothing like what you describe was depicted in the movie. There’s no Hillary, or psuedo-Hillary callously leaving our brave boys to die depicted in the movie. I mean, I haven’t seen it, but everyone who has says that it’s not like that.

So why exactly do you think the movie is going to doom Hillary?

Because it seems to me that if the movie doesn’t show Hillary brushing off pleas for help, and the eight Congressional investigations of Benghazi don’t show Hillary brushing off pleas for help, then your concern that a person who would brush off pleas for help isn’t presidential material is irrelevant, because Hillary never did any such thing, and you’re free to vote for her with a clear conscience now.

Or vote against her, if you don’t like her. But since your objection was that she abandoned the Benghazi embassy staff despite them begging her for help, and since that never actually happened, then there must be some other reason you don’t like her. But if so, why are you posting here about the Benghazi movie and how it will doom Hillary?

Would it even have been her decision? She’s Secretary of Talking to Folks Overseas, what military authority does that entail? Which branch of the service does she command, is it the Navy Seals or Rangers?

If the military guys said “Yeah, totally worth it, we got the manpower on hand, the transportation is fueled and ready, got the latest and reliable intel on the opposition. All we need now is the go ahead from the Secretary of State.” Is that when she “brushed it off”?

“Stand down, guys, this lady on the Commander in Chief’s cabinet says no go. No point in waiting for Sec of Labor to override.”

Spoken like a sniveling hippie liberal. A man has a right to choose his wife’s friends.

Thanks for the link. Shagnasty was obviously talking about a different service for four different guys who were killed in a different incident, because there is nothing in that transcript about covering her ass.

But… but… but… she said “video”!!! Yes, and she was absolutely correct to do so, since it was known to be responsible for protests and/or riots around the world, just as she said. She didn’t say it was related to Benghazi.

But people will hear what they want to hear, and believe what they want to believe. I can understand someone at the service misremembering what she said, but there’s no excuse for people who have the transcript available, e.g. every Fox News host and analyst.

I know these are not SDMB-approved sources like CNN, but…

“How did they miss Ambassador Stevens’ emails? None of the seven previous committees bothered to access the emails of our ambassador,” the South Carolina Republican told CBS News’ “Face the Nation”.

“Why were there so many requests for security equipment and personnel, and why were those requests denied in Washington?” Representative Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, the committee chairman, demanded to know as he opened the hearing on Thursday morning. “What did our leaders in Washington do or not do, and when?”

And FTR, I did not go into the film as a Clinton supporter. I also don’t think she’s Superwoman and could have saved all those people. And I don’t think she bears full personal responsibility for all those deaths. I just don’t think she reacted in a way that’s fit to be our 45th President.

The first cite is useless; it’s just the head Hillary-hater spouting more bullshit without specifics. Did Stevens email HRC directly?

Fortunately, your second cite gives the answer: "He did not raise security with the members of my staff,” she said. “He raised security with the security professionals.”

So no, the Secretary of State does not decide how many security personnel an outpost needs; she has people for that. Just like Donald Trump does not decide when to order new bearings for an elevator in one of his hotels.

I think Michael Bay is a known conservative. I hear the movie is his typical ‘big booms, shit story’ output.

If the CIA was operating out of Benghazi arent all the conservatives and everyone making a big deal out of it just blowing our CIA operatives and our countries cover like a retard?

Before I get excited about this I’d want to know a little more:
How many requests were there from Benghazi?
How many requests were there from the all of the State Department facilities abroad?
How many requests were fulfilled from Benghazi?
How many requests were fulfilled from all of the State Department facilities abroad?

The reality is that it is/was a resource constrained environment and someone had to prioritize. After the fact selective facts don’t mean anything in isolation.

Actually, it cost $50 million to make and has already made $43 million domestically. Certainly not blockbuster territory, but it’s well on its way to a tidy profit.

Keep in mind that the production budget does not include marketing costs.

But yeah, it’s not going to end up a complete bomb.

I heard that Hillary requested budget increases to strengthen security in Libya and other embassies multiple times before the whole Benghazi debacle and the Republicans in congress told her to pound sand. Any truth to these claims?

If these claims are true, are they going to affect your opinion at all Rilchiam?

According to Dingbang, the movie does not refer to any such brush-offs. So is he wrong (or lying), or are you projecting your prior beliefs onto the film?

We’ve got to keep a few things clear here.

Did the movie show Hillary, or a Hillary-like character, repeatedly refuse requests for backup from the consulate?

The answer appears to be no. I haven’t seen the movie, but everyone who has says that no such scenes or characters are in the movie.

In real life did Hillary repeatedly refuse requests for backup from the consulate?

The answer appears to be no. No such thing actually happened.

Did Hillary talk about some video that supposedly started some of the riots? Yeah, she did. Do we think the guys who attacked the consulate was a random mob of guys who were angry about the video and spontaneously decided to attack? No we don’t.

So that’s Hillary’s crime? That she talked about how maybe this video sparked something, and that turned out not to be true? And therefore Benghazi is all her fault? Is that the allegation here?

We know that the worst attackers were terrorists who planned it in advance. We don’t know whether there were also spontaneous protesters there, but it seems likely that there were, since the citizens of Benghazi would have read about the video-inspired riots in Cairo, Yemen, etc., and probably had nothing better to do.

I still haven’t seen the movie, but I got the book it’s based on (13 Hours, by Mitchell Zuckoff, about whom I have already composed the first two lines of a poem) from the library. The book says that the security guys claim that the CIA base chief in Benghazi, identified only as “Bob” because he’s made to look like a cowardly asshole, was the one who told them to “stand down” — not only on Sept. 11, but on previous occasions when Americans were in danger, because he didn’t want to blow the CIA’s cover. “Bob” denies this.

The book also says that during the attack, Obama ordered the Dept of Defense to respond with all available assets, but that for various reasons, they couldn’t get anyone there in time. He adds that Hillary also phoned the President of Libya and asked him to help by supplying security personnel, and by greasing the access of any Americans who needed to get there.

So, that’s what the book said. If the movie said anything different, that’s Hollywood.

The comments section for the movie at IMDB is full of people wanting to try Hillary for treason, and they keep asking, why would the contractors lie?

So let’s think about this. The conspiracy people say, among other things, that HRC and Obama refused requests to add security personnel months before the attack, because they didn’t want it to look like terrorist threats were increasing during an election year. So they’re prepared to believe that months before the attack, Benghazi was so prominent in everyone’s mind that the addition of half a dozen security people would have been a big enough deal to affect the election.

They also say that after the attack, they deliberately lied about the video causing it, so they’re prepared to believe that Obama and HRC thought it sounded better to say they didn’t have adequate security to prevent a spontaneous group of video protesters from overrunning the compound, than to say they didn’t have enough security to withstand a planned attack from heavily armed al Qaeda troops.

They’re prepared to believe all that, but they can find no motive whatever for people whose job it was to protect the ambassador, after the ambassador was killed, to say they could have saved him if they hadn’t been told to stand down.

“Bob’s a cowardly duck cough”
They said to Mitchell Zuckoff…

You can have that, glad to help…

(Thinking AA-BB rhyme scheme, folowing the classical *rime stupide *rhythmic structure)

I saw the movie today. It does not have a strong partisan message. It was a good movie and worth seeing. It does not bash or even mention Hillary.

Shagnasty, I am sorry for your wife’s loss, and yours, and of the family and loved ones of Glen Doherty, and Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, and Tyrone Woods.

Why wasn’t any support sent to help or cover these people???

It was:

Midnight to 2 am - Secretary Panetta and other senior leaders discuss possible options for further violence if it were to break out. Panetta gives verbal orders for Marine anti-terrorist teams from Rota, Spain, to prepare to deploy to Tripoli and Benghazi. Panetta also orders a special operations force team training in Croatia and an additional special operations force team in the U.S. to prepare to deploy to a staging base in southern Italy.

1:30 am - A six-man security team from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli arrives in Benghazi.

2:39 am to 2:53 am - The National Military Command Center gives formal authorization for the deployment of the two special operations force teams from Croatia and the United States.

7:57 pm - The U.S. special operations force team based in Croatia arrives at a staging base in Italy.

8:56 pm - One of the Marine anti-terrorist teams from Spain arrives in Tripoli.

9:28 pm - The U.S.-based special operations force team arrives at its staging base in Italy.

They were sent (or mobilized), but only the first team (from Tripoli) arrived in time to affect the outcome.
