The musical joy of Renaissance-who else remembers it?

Over time, I’ve been replacing important musical pieces that were loaned, kiped, damaged, or otherwise made no longer available.

Today, a CD arrived from a half.com seller and I was eager to hear with my ears what I’d only heard in my mind for so many years: Renaissance. Classically influenced rock of the mid 70’s along with the glorious soaring soprano vocals of Annie Haslam.

Am I alone?

I love Renassance – the original group, not the blandified version with Annie Haslam. “Kings and Queens” is one of the best fusions of classical and rock ever.

Alas, Keith and Jane Relf left and the group lost its edge. And without John Hawken, they were nothing much. His piano was truly breathtaking.

i love the song mother russia

I liked them, but also thought they were very uneven.

Still, “Carpet of the Sun” is one of the most beautiful rock songs ever.

I was just listening to it in the car. I love their sound and Annie’s voice. I have the two live records by King Biscuit’s Flower Hour, Prologue and Ashes are Burning.
Wish I had the two records from the first incarnation of the band and more of the classical line-up.

I had a major crush on Annie for years (there is an odd “sexiness” there), of course I was way late (this was in the mid eighties), I had a major “thing” for Gillie Smith too!
Renaissance rocks!.

I consider Northern lights one of my all-time favourite songs.

I know next to nothing about the band, but they opened for the first concert I ever went to (Al DiMeola was the headliner), back in 1977 or 78.

Very pretty, as I recall.
