The Never Ending LDS Slam-Fest, or why Fighting Ignorance doesn't apply equally here.

Get over yourself, 'Toon. It is not insulting to ask a legitimate, factual question about somebody else’s religion. The OP in that thread had been told by his friend that Mormons wear “magic underwear.” He asked if it was true, and quickly received accurate responses. If fail to see how that question–asked out of ignorance, not malice–amounts to Mormon-bashing. If you don’t know anything about the religion, “magic underwear” is a rough, but legitimate, approximation of Temple garments.

Or perhaps you remember this column. Good god, what the hell was Cecil thinking by answering that factual inquiry instead of flaming the questioner for his obvious racial hatred?

  1. I’ve no truck with people who are apologists for child rapists either. Child abuse is evil, and that’s that.

  2. It’s good to defend a point of view. It’s good to defend it vigorously. What I have a small beef with is the way you do it with all phasers set to kill, even when people are mainly agreeing with you, but disagreeing over a few small points and questions of interpretation.

  3. I’m not upset, really. I’m not impressed with the way you go for people that point out slightly differing points of view to your own. I’m sort of worried that it’ll make people tune you out, and think “Oh, there goes Cartooniverse off on one of his manic rants again”.

I didn’t like it when I saw you’d assumed that Green Bean was saying you’d be the sort of person to physically harm someone, when it seemed clear to me that she was talking about the way you get verbally agressive.

I thought your OP was great, although a little hyperbolic in places (but rants need hyperbole sometimes). There is anti-religious sentiment on this board, and people who should know better do forget to be respectful when talking about other people’s faiths.

What this hijack’s been about is the way you seem to go a bit apeshit when someone questions a small part of your rant/point of view. That’s all.

Email me if you like.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like they’re watching a meltdown, similiar to Freak Freely?

This feels almost like an intervention.

Seriously, Cartooniverse, I think you have some serious issues. You REALLY need to get a fucking grip already.

Articulated fully - read your own words. In this thread and many, many others. You are plainly melting down, AGAIN, and like I said if you want to ride that tiger and start complaining about the postings of others and making either Board action threats or quasi-legal “threats”, you have to realize something. I’m remembering a line about “glass houses”.

You cannot continuously treat the Members of this Board like shit the way that you do, acting like a jerk, and expect to remain here as a Member. This ain’t inside info, this ain’t a threat - you ought to know these things, as long as you’ve been here.

I’m sorry your passive-aggresive persecution complex sees this as a “threat”. And the irony of you quoting the “Jerk” Rule is profoundly surreal in quality. Somewhere, on the East Coast, I can almost here a man saying “Dude! Where’s my brain?”

One thing you’ve forgotten is that trying to start Board Wars is a big-assed no-no here. I think you should mail a Moderator to remand your post. Now.

I agree with Tansu - you had a decent OP. Too bad your insanity would not let you treat Green Bean and others here with any sort dignity and respect. This hijack is your fault, and you goddamn well know it, so don’t try to act all sorry that things (ONCE AGAIN) got out of control in one of your many Pit threads.

You owe Green Bean and many others here on the SDMB an abject, heartfelt, unconditional, apology. Read what you said to them. No one can force you to do this, but great God, have you no sense of honor?

I just thought I’d weigh in and say that I can not stand the LDS. Never liked 'em, never will.
Damn Latvians, and don’t even get me started on that Olof guy. You call that a chair? That ain’t no goddamn chair - it’s a piece of Origami, ya stupid Swede

Okay, I’m game. Exactly how does one design a Latvian?

Well first you have to have a vision of the finished Latvian and draw up plans. I can’t even begin to describe how many Latvians have been ruined by poor planning…

< ahem >

Back on topic, put me in the “OP was ok, melt-down wasn’t” camp.

And as someone who, almost any time I mention I’m a Jew, hears “Wait, you’re Jewish? Why don’t you wear that…you know…beanie-thingie?” I think you’re overreacting about the “magic underwear” thing. Questions asked in good faith even if poorly phrased shouldn’t prompt outrage, IMO.

Fenris

Fenris,

I’m surprised you didn’t answer with “Correctly.” Ah, another idol bites the dust.

Anyway, when someone asks me in person “Why do Mormons wear magic undewear?” I respond with, “First off, it’s not called magic underwear. We don’t believe in magic.” Then I tell them what I know about Temple Garments.

Magic underwear…

I dunno, maybe you’d get more converts that way. Tell them they get to wear special, secret undies.

Okay, I’m KIDDING!!!

d&r

Exactly. I do the same with yarmulkes (which I can’t spell).

I don’t immediately assume racism/anti-semitism.

Fenris

Actually, Fenris, I did mean it to be anti-Semitic. Sorry for the misunderstanding, ya fuckin’ Jew bastard.

Esprix

This has got to be a joke. Yes?

No idea, grien. I always get Fenris and Esprix confused anyway.

Read this really, really slowly, m’kay? I do not care what you think. The veiled threats are so very tiresome. Stop threatening me, ok? You wanna flame, go for it, pour on the propane. But for the love of god, stop threatening me, or heavily “suggesting” that I do this that or the other thing. My requirements are to abide by, and respect the rules of this Board, as any Member would. I’m not required to do what you want me to do, and more to the point, I’m not required to post or behave in a manner that fulfills your demands. As long as I post into the Pit, or any other forum here and regard the rules, I don’t care one whit what you want, or do not want.

I say that with all due respect, of course.

Interesting how all of a sudden, you’ve made this about you and another Board. I had no intention of starting a Board War ( whatever that is- each board exists by its own rules and internal machinations, I cannot even imagine HOW one would try to make a war. Maybe YOU know about such things, but I’ve never read the phrase before I read your post. Feh. ).

But, it’s not about you. Thank you for what you said about my O.P. However, I will remind you, as I did Greenbean, that an Administrator on THIS Board has made it very clear that another Big-Assed No-No is misquoting someone. So? Nuh? Provide the quote where I said, " Hey, I’m starting a Board War". All I said was that you might wish to remember your place- just as I might wish to remember my place, by the way. I know my place. I have a rant, I post in the Pit. I have a problem that is not appropraite to be aired in public, I exercise my rights as a member of THIS Board, to write to Administration for advice or suggestions. I’m so very sorry that you disagree with that policy.

Threatening me with violation of a “big assed no no” is amusing, since in fabricating something that I never said, you yourself have violated another Rule of the Road, at least it’s a rule of the road on this Board.

Perhaps you’re just really digging the intense hijack you’re into here?

I appreciate the remarks that are more focused on the O.P. I wrote it for what I thought were fairly clear reasons, and some Dopers have chimed in to agree with that position. I’ll show you the respect of believing that indeed, you understand what my position was in the O.P.

Can anyone show me where Anthracite falsely attributed a quote to Cartooniverse? That is, used the “quote” tags, put words that Cartooniverse didn’t say between them, and then put “Originally posted by Cartooniverse” above it?

Oh, wait, nevermind – she didn’t do that.

Cartooniverse-“threats?”

Um, paranoid much?

Personally, guys, I’m sure the mods will see this and decide for themselves.

In the meantime, dude, take a break. Please. You’re really starting to scare me.

It’s fairly common here for any individual poster to remind other posters about rules (especially when they think the other poster may be nudging near a line). This is not the same thing as a ‘threat’. Nowhere, no how, no way.

So, no, as far as I can see, not only didn’t Anthracite misquote you, she also did not threaten you.
Of course, you’re free to dismiss me, as you have other folks in this thread. But IMHO, you do owe some apologies here.

This is kind of like saying, "You’re wrong, I’m not arguing with you. Provide the quote where I said, ‘Hey, I’m arguing with you.’ "

’Toon, I like you . I disagree with you on this one, but I like you. And that’s why I’m going to walk away from this thread. No further good can come of it, I believe.

Well I’m LDS and have shopped at both LDS and Christian Bookstores.

** yosemitebabe** is correct when she points out
that

Bashing of Christians, Christianity and the LDS faith all feel the same to me because I identify as Christian and LDS. (This is not the thread to debate whether anyone agrees with me on that though, there have been several in GD before I ever came along.)

yosemitebabe, I was in high school the first time I noticed “anti-Mormon” leaflets in a Christian bookstore. It was many years before I returned to a Christian bookstore, but return I did when my children were young because the kinds of basic teachings in childrens materials, music and so on were more plentiful and less of a long distance drive from a Christian bookstore than an LDS one. The one I go settled at, does not seem to have any “anti-Mormon” material about, if they have it, it’s not where you would see it browsing all the isles. I must admit I wasn’t looking for them though. I can provide titles of books or cassettes I’ve purchased at a Christian bookstore if that is any sort of “evidence”. Additionally, on more than one occasion, I have seen the same book in both LDS and Christian bookstores.
