The new word you can't say on television

Teabagger.

Bill Maher was on David Letterman last week and they bleeped every usage of that word.

Is this censorship for profanity, or because CBS is pro-tea party and puts that stance before the 1st amendment?

You may disagree with their choices, but I thought you’d know that the 1st amendment has nothing whatsoever to do with what words CBS decides to censor for whatever reason.

yeah, corporate censorship is cool and nice and lovely!

It is a First Amendment matter if CBS is censoring because of federal regulation of broadcasting. However, in this case, I doubt if a federal agency would find the word “teabagger” offensive – though stranger things have happened in the past.

I didn’t say that.
I just said it’s not a First Amendment issue. Do you disagree?

If Bill Maher can’t find enough to blast the Tea Party for w/o having to resort to language that a 12 year-old would find hilarious, perhaps he ought to pack it up.

Sorry, can’t see the outrage.

Just because it does not fall directly under the First Amendment does not mean it is not stupid and wrong, as almost all censorship is. I take the view that the existence of the First Amendment means our society should be favorably disposed toward free speech in almost all circumstances.

Or not, but regardless it is not prohibited by the constitution.

Do they usually bleep sexual insults on the show? If so, I’m not sure what the problem is.

Maher said he would quit calling them Teabaggers when they quit calling it Obamacare.

Which still has nothing to do with correcting fusoya’s apparent misunderstanding of said amendment. If you feel obliged to spout about your feelings regarding censorship, kindly do so when it’s actually relevant to the point being made.

Yeah, but “Obamacare” doesn’t reference sexual acts (especially one done to sleeping or passed-out people (which I thought was akin to rape, but that’s another debate)).

It’s like saying “I’ll stop calling you people ‘cunts’ if you stop referring to ‘Micro$oft’.”

Oh, what utter bullshit. It’s absurd to suggest that a private entity such as CBS is obliged to promulgate all points of view. That would be tantamount to declaring that the First Amendment doesn’t apply to them, since you’d be mandating what they had to say.

Are you saying it’s a weak teabagging?

Did they actually use the “beeeeep” sound? It just infuriates me when they use that rather than just muting.

While teabagging can be done to a passed-out person, the same can be said of almost any other sexual act. And I had always understood the implication of the term “teabagger” to be that they consciously wanted the act performed.

Also, does it color the discussion any that the term was first used by those to whom it’s being applied?

Yeah, the color of hilarious.

Maher should, on his show, bleep out every utterance of “santorum”.

So opposing censorship and advocating free speech is itself a form of censorship? I’m censoring the censors, am I? All kinda BS flying around here … :dubious:

The First Amendment is about government action, not private action. You don’t have the right to mandate to CBS what it does and does not air; nor does the government. Freedom of the press means that the press is free to decide what it will and will not disseminate.
