The Next Time I Hear Someone Claiming That Immigrants Have Special Advantages . . .

I’m confused, chula, are you saying you’re being discrimated against because you’re an American living abroad?

discriminated, that is.

And I didn’t find a GQ about that topic started by you. It’s probably me.

I am an American living in the United States, applying for jobs with American organizations. They “strongly encourage non-U.S. citizens to apply” for the positions and have never hired an American.

Sublight, I’m not sure what you’re getting at. First of all, I ain’t no kid. There really is a sort of affirmative action program. They prefer to have foreigners on the payroll because it shows they have a “non-U.S.” perspective. Never mind that they’re hiring Europeans and occasionally someone from a developing country whose family is extremely weathly. Never mind that I speak several languages and have spent time among some of the poorest, most isolated peoples in the world. I could go on and on… the point is supposedly the non-U.S. citizens are assumed to have an additional qualification of understanding some exotic culture, which is utter bullshit.

Good thing we’re already in the Pit.

chula, I suppose about the only thing I can say is, “Can you give me the names of some of these organizations?”

In the meantime, I’ll go back on the hunt. Like I said, I have vivid memories of being turned down for jobs for lack of citizenship when I was more than halfway through the naturalization process. I also spent too much time reading the WN Great Debates.

I hate job hunting!

Another person chiming in with “Tell me the name of these organization(s)?”

This is completely outside the norm. MOST companies especially in the current economy have a statement that says :“Only citizens and permanent residents need apply”

In my experience, that needs to be modified to “Only citizens and permanent residents need apply unless we have your sponsorship in our pockets and can pay you less than prevailing wage by defining your job as a lower position than the one you actually fill and we’ll ship you right back if you give us any guff.”

YMMV

I know it’s not the norm in general, but it is in my field. It’s a pretty small field that requires specialized education, so I doubt you guys would qualify. Sorry, no job leads.

I am special, dammit!

Not special people, special education. Ur… I mean “specialized”.

Wasn’t one of the incoming governors born outside the US?

I think it’s Granholm in MI, and she was Canadian?
