The Nigerians are apologizing

How about the Harvard professor, who actually scammed money from coworkers, friends and students to send to Nigeria. He claimed it was to set up a SARS research lab in China.

I know of an elderly lady who fell for a phone solicitation of the same caliber. She sent $3000 cashier’s check to Canada on the promise of some large payout. I think she even gave them her personal account info. My friend is her bookkeeper and had to shut down the accounts, etc., but of course there was no way to recover the money.

Did some city government official dump city funds into somthing like the Nigerian scam?
Ah, yes. Here it is. Former Alcona County and Lake Huron County treasurer Thomas Katona in Michigan.

Ahhhh, the good will is spreading.

Here’s another one that’s making the rounds:

I have been touched by God to donate from what I have inherited from my late husband to you for the good work of God, rather than allow my relatives to use my husband’s hard earned funds ungodly. I have asked God to forgive me all my sins and i believe he has because He is a merciful God.

(The same message is repeated three times in the e-mail.)

It’s a miracle, in’it, all the kind folks in the world today.

It’s not all scams! Today the I.R.S. e-mailed me that I was getting a tax refund - the princely sum of $60!

I’m happy to see that government is finally becoming proactive and helping us poor citizens. They even set up a new website just for this program, the link I was sent to isn’t irs.gov, it was “www.bullydog.us” - I guess they have a sense of humour down at the tax agency. As soon as I give them my info I’ll be getting money deposited directly into my bank account. Sweet!

My wife is a call-taker at the police department. She’s usually on 999 (which is like America’s 911) but she also gets the non-emergency calls as well. One day she got a nice man that sounded about 35
"Hello…I have a letter and I think it might be a scam?
"What leads you to believe that?
"Well it says I won the Spanish lottery for XXXX amount
"Did you enter the Spanish Lottery?
"No
"Have you been to Spain recently?
"No
"Lotteries generally don’t award money to random foreigners that didn’t enter the lottery to begin with
"Hmm…you’re probably right but it is a lot of money. It’d be a shame to miss out if it was real
"Sir this is a common scam don’t under any circumstances give these people any money or your bank details
"I don’t know. Are you sure it’s a scam? They have this number here to call and confirm
"sigh what’s the number?
"########
"That’s a premium rate number that will charge you by the min to call and all you’ll get is a stranger ‘confirming’ that it’s ok to give you them your bank details.
"you’re probably right…but it’s a lot of money…I’ll have to think about it. click

My poor wife I imagine she wanted to bang her head against the desk after that.

I dunno, sounds pretty legit to me. Where’s my checkbook?
:stuck_out_tongue:
