The funny thing is it’s not an either-or deal. I logged countless hours on GTA3 and Vice City. I like dark games and RPGs. I like deep stories and good graphics. I’d like to have a 360 eventually, and I’d like to play GTA4. I also like Metroid and Zelda and bright cheerful Mario games. I’m just as happy playing Super Paper Mario as I am GTA.
A couple days ago I went and bought both Mario Kart and No More Heroes, which is decidedly bloody and dark for a Wii game. I enjoy them both. There’s no need to denigrate the Wii or the 360 (although the PS3 may be mocked at will ).
And I completely agree with that. It’s not an either or type of deal. Well, in my case, because I log so much time on Halo 3, it’s more of an either-or type of deal (I still haven’t finished Bully, althogh I’m pretty far in it and I’ve got Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 that I sometimes play with a group of friends comes on and I’m 30 or so games into a baseball season in MLB 2K8, so I have to make time for video games).
No, I’m not having a laugh. There’s nothing funny about it. I don’t like fantasy, I hate Zelda, I hate cartoony Mario type shit - Resident Evil and GTA and Metal Gear Solid are unrealistic in theory, but they are fairly realistic in terms of how the gameplay world is executed in the game. That’s what I’m trying to say, is I don’t want a game that’s full of fun and joy and bright shiny colors. I hate Super Smash Brothers, I think it’s horseshit. I hate “party games.” The games I like are games that try to provide a virtual experience that is similar to reality, not a happy-happy-fun-time. Like in Metal Gear Solid 3, how you can talk to Sigint on the radio and have him tell you the actual real-life history, and mechanical operation, of all of the guns in the game, and you can call Para-Medic and she will tell you about every single kind of animal that you can catch, and what region of the world it originates from, and stuff like that.
I agree about the boring gray and brown colors, I hate that shit. I wish they’d make games that were more colorful.
I think what the Wii has done best is kept things simple. Which is why it has appealed to such a wide variety of people. From the oldies to the babies. It’s easy to set things up. It’s easy to get into the games. It’s fun and intuitive to use the WiiMote. A side effect of keeping things simple is that the price has stayed low. And the consistent low price, more than anything, has welcomed more people into the folds then any other member of this generation’s consoles.
Having said that, I think some of the complaints are valid and hand waving explanations like “Nintendo didn’t want to do that” doesn’t really answer the complaint adequately. The Wii’s lack of robust fun online play is something that is going to be more and more of a defect as time goes on. From what I understand it is really quite a pain to set up. And, even worse most games allow you to play against others, but not way to communicate. Yes, Nintendo is great as a device that the family plays together in the same room. But, I think there are plenty of users who want the ability to play over a network with friends in far flung places. So, yes, it is a flaw that the Wii is working against.
I do wish there were more games that really took advantage of the Wii remote in a meaningful way. It sounds like the upcoming Star Wars game is going to. And, Wii Sports is pretty fun, too. I do think it can be more than a novelty, but at this point it’s little more than one. As the Wii matures and game makers get used to dealing with the remote it will get more and more logical fun use.
In the end, I could never say that the Wii sucks; it clearly doesn’t. The Wii is great in many ways. I wish Sony and Microsoft had decided to simply make consoles that play games instead of a desire to take over the living room. (jack of all trades and all that) But, I do think Nintendo has dropped the ball in a couple of places. They have played so well in so many other areas that it has not mattered.
Oh, there is, you just don’t see it. But it’s probably time for me to stop poking the bear. You’ve got your opinion, as lovely and belligerent as it is, and I’ve got mine.
2nd Paragrah: I agree, though I also feel a lot of the games on 360/PS3 have a similar failing (but this is more to a designer neglect than a system one). My friends don’t all have 360s, hell some of them are still stuck in the PS2/GC/Xbox era, I’d really like to do some local multiplayer at my plac enow and then and way too many games only feature online play.
3rd: We’re in the same stage the DS is in, the developers didn’t know what to make of it, and as of now any game (even first party titles) that doesn’t make you jump like a loon isn’t really using the controller the best. I really want to see a game that really just “hits” it like Elite Beat Agents or Phantom Hourglass did on the DS. Especially the latter one.
Overall if I could force Nintendo to do one thing that isn’t super business effective it would be to release a “Wii HD” with the power of a 360 or PS3, but keep the control scheme. Sure some issues like online won’t be fixed, but we not only get better graphics, but also more processing power and such so that we can have better AI and all the other bells and whistles that come with that.
I see then, I just happen to like stylized things a lot (though I also love healthy doses of realism at times, if I had a PS3, which I’m working on, I’d definately get Resident Evil 5). At least we agree on the color though, wanna make picket signs and stand outside Epic for a while?
Funny that you think you’re somehow objectively right about all this, because I feel exactly opposite about games. If I want a real FPS experience I’ll go join the Marines. They’re recruiting. I play games for cartoony Mario type shit.
Please, tell me what the hell it is that’s so funny about what I wrote. I want to know. You think it’s that ridiculous that I would give GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resident Evil 5 as examples of “realistic” games that are not fantasy or science fiction? What the fuck is so funny about that? I’m comparing them to stuff like Zelda and Metroid here, alright? Those games try to emulate real life - things like body proportions, the physics of weapons, things like that. That’s my point. Compared to shit like Super Smash Bros., those three games that I listed are as realistic as you can get. Is there anything like that for the Wii? Please, tell me if there is? Red Steel, where you can slice guys across the face with a katana and not draw a drop of blood? Where’s the equivalent action game for the Wii?
Where the fuck am I saying that I’m objectively right about anything? Read over my post again:
I don’t like fantasy, I hate Zelda, I hate cartoony Mario type shit - Resident Evil and GTA and Metal Gear Solid are unrealistic in theory, but they are fairly realistic in terms of how the gameplay world is executed in the game. That’s what I’m trying to say, is I don’t want a game that’s full of fun and joy and bright shiny colors. I hate Super Smash Brothers, I think it’s horseshit. Those words which I conveniently put into big, red letters so it’s easy to read them, such as “I like,” “I don’t like,” “I think,” et cetera, mean that it is my opinion. I’m not trying to objectively declare anything, I’m trying to explain why I hate the Wii. If you like it, fine. I’m trying to explain why I don’t like it.
OK, I take it back then, I don’t like “games that suck,” I like games that I THINK DO NOT SUCK. Okay? I LIKE GAMES THAT I THINK DO NOT SUCK. There. OK, I said it. I take it back. If I could go back in time, only once, I would erase the stupid things that I said. I wouldn’t buy stock in Microsoft or bet on football or fuck Marie Antoinette right before she got her head chopped off, I would delete my foolish, ignorant, pig-headed posts. Okay?
See, I’d love to be able to experience a realistic simulation of combat without actually taking the risk of being killed. On the other hand, if I just wanted to experience bright colors and goofy visuals, I would…well, I won’t say it here, but it rhymes with “MSG.”
But here’s the thing. The Wii is just a console. There’s nothing that would stop the kind of games you like from being on that console. And as others have pointed out. Resident Evil 4 is out on the Wii. Metroid Prime 3 is out on the Wii. Zelda is out on the Wii. Dismissing the whole console as a “toy” because you don’t like the flagship games is the height of fanboyism. There are tons of Wii games out now (and that will be out in the future) that fit your description.
And again, the Wii is way more powerful than the PS2 and Xbox, which had all of the games you’re talking about. There is nothing stopping Rockstar from putting a GTA game on the Wii (and in fact, I think one will be announced at E3 this year now that GTA4 is out).
You’ve confused “I don’t like it” with “It’s inferior in some way” and you don’t get to do that without looking like a fool.
I agree about GTA on the Wii, by the way. I predicted it when Table Tennis came out: it uses essentially the same engine as GTA4. Then Bully Championship Edition, for further programming experience. Why spend that effort getting people used to working on the Wii if not to bring out the big gun?
Oh, and here, Argent. People have suggested this to you.
Enjoy. It’s gameplay, not a trailer, so it’s not as splashy.
Eh. No blood, Gamecube-level graphics, and the whole style of it is way too flashy/futuristic for my tastes. I might be able to enjoy playing it for a while, but I doubt I could get into it the way I get into the Metal Gear Solid games.
I just have pretty specific tastes, I guess. Metal Gear Solid 3 is the “bar” as far as I’m concerned, in terms of graphics, story, depth of gameplay, interactivity, and attempt to mirror the look and feel of real life. When I see something like that on the Wii, I may change my tune.
Oh yeah and for what it’s worth…my favorite system of all time is the Dreamcast, baby. Shenmue just might be the greatest game ever - in no other game have I ever seen that amount of depth and true-life realism. And the most vivid, beautiful colors, as well.
Contentious statements aside, the Wii is severely lacking in the games Argent Towers likes. It does have some that would fit his descriptions except, for the most part, they all seem to be ports of PS2 versions.
The Wii and PS3/Xbox 360 definitely put emphasis on different aspects of gaming and the things that the PS3 and Xbox 360 put more stock in are those that Argent Towers seems to value. Just as the Wii appeals to a middle aged mother who never played video games, it seems the Xbox 360 and PS3 appeal to Argent Towers.
