You completely and utterly missed the point of his post. You are just making a knee jerk response when that statistical talking point gets mentioned.
Of course black people are disproportionately killed more frequently by the cops. But just because black people are at more risk doesn’t mean white people aren’t killed by the cops too, and since there are a lot more white people there are more white people killed by the cops.
And how many times does the NRA get upset about innocent white gun owners killed by the cops? Zero times. So the contention that if Castile were white the NRA would be protesting is false. They never protest when an innocent black guy gets gunned down by the cops, but they also never protest when an innocent white guy gets gunned down by the cops.
Which is why I actually mentioned that in my post, but thanks for repointing it out. I may have forgotten I typed it.
If you really want to look closely at the stats, the real issueis that blacks are arrested at a higher rate proportionate to their percentage of the population.
Per these numbers, deaths as a percentage of arrests (the only measurable way to count the number of police/public interactions, even though one doesn’t have to be arrested to be shot) hold pretty close regardless of race. Now, solve for why blacks are arrested so much more frequently, on proportion, than other races and deaths will go down. Is racism a part of that issue? I would be my house on it - but so is poverty, family dynamics, real or perceived lack of opportunity, etc., etc.
Why is the ratio of crimes by race not used?
80% committed by ( ********* ) as compared to the % of those killed by police for example.
If we only look at wrongful death by shooting of only innocent people who did not do something illegal or really stupid even if technically legal how does this work out.
It seems that in one of the latest, the first information was way wrong and now there are pictures to back up that it was way wrong but the ‘anti-police’ or major gun control advocates will not admit that it was wrong and so they keep on yelling and making claims that are wrong.
But how often does the latter happen? Do we have cellphone footage of such an event?
Well, to give you some idea of what I consider common sense, the only restriction as far as handguns and long arms that I believe there should be for private citizens is not being allowed to own fully-automatic weapons (and actually, you can apply for a federal permit to own them). Everything else doesn’t matter. Magazine capacity, folding stocks, semi-auto, total number of weapons owned or bullets purchased per day, etc. they are all just meaningless window dressing that the anti-gun lobby obsesses over because, to them, all guns are evil and dangerous.
And yes, saying something like, “Well, obviously nobody needs a 40-round magazine…”, when it is stated as the policy of an anti-gun organization (not just an individual’s statement), it is noting more than one step in a long-term attempt at getting your foot farther in the door to getting all weapons banned.
Why don’t we have automakers build all cars with governors that restrict them to no more than 70 MPH? No one needs to go any faster (except police). Why not link them to built-in GPS computers that know the road your on’s top speed limit and restrict it to that? Why not build-in police controlled, cellular connected ‘kill-switches’ to all cars to eliminate high speed chases? Why don’t we make breathalyzer ignition interlocks standard on all cars, rather than waiting until someone gets their first DUI? What, you’re saying you’re in favor of allowing *anyone *to drink & drive! How dare you! This is all just reasonable common sense!!
On what basis are you drawing the line of reasonableness under automatic weapons?
ISTM whether it’s an arbitrary line, or because such machines are dangerous in the hands of someone uneducated in their use, your point is self-refuting.
This isn’t really a gun control thread.
It certainly happens with shocking frequency. The Dillon Taylor shooting was caught on the police officer’s bodycam and there appears to be no reason for him to have been shot, but of course the cop wasn’t charged.
Mainly because its nearly impossible to track such stats since we have no way to know if the dead person really committed a crime. The stats in my previous post show arrests vs. killed by race and % of population. The numbers hold pretty true. As I indicated above, the real issue is that we don’t know why blacks are arrested at a higher rate than whites. Racism? Profiling? Poverty? Family or lack thereof? Commit more crimes? Probably some from every category, but it seems that no one wants to do the hard work of actually figuring out the root cause(s). Only when we know that can we effectively address the issue(s).
