My office is at Wall and Broadway, about 3 blocks SE of the WTC. Last I heard the street in front of our doorway was under 4 inches of ash and soot and crap. And that was before buildings started falling down (god, I can’t believe I just wrote that), so things are probably worse now. No idea when we’ll be able to go back, really.
Schools are closed, and the Mayor has requested that, unless you perform an “essential” service, you not go in to work today. We’re both here in Brooklyn with the kids.
I’m doing laundry, and just made a pot of chicken soup with alphabet noodles (comfort food for the children), and Uke Lady is having a run in Prospect Park.
Mail was delivered yesterday, UPS delivered this morning, and our garbage was collected a few hours ago, right on schedule. The goddam GAS COMPANY man even arrived to do the annual boiler maintenance at 9:30 AM. Wow.
The Mayor has suggested that everyone try to have a “normal” day…though I’ve never been a big fan of his, I think Giuliani is doing a magnificent job right now.
I work on Wall Street. Some of my co-workers have home access and they are working from home. I do not have home access and so I am on stand-by until further notice.
I’m home, as my office is in the “below 14th Street” zone that is reserved for emergency workers (and residents, of course). I did some phone and email work from home, but we’re still far away from business as usual. In terms of the work flow, I mean. Spirit-wise, everyone I have spoken with from work is doing well, and amazing to me, the news of spouses/family of my coworkers who were at the WTC has all been fortunate so far. We have a big office, so this is awesome, in the true sense of “awe.”
I don’t know why, exactly, vix, maybe it was just seeing the near-panic over your safety yesterday morning when hell was breaking loose, but your response to the question gave me a nice smile.
Those are few and far between right now, and thanks for making it happen. I’m glad you’re safe.
