True, well, maybe the plane would have been toast, but the passengers would be okay.
I remember reading a fantasy/SF story somewhere that postulated that time travelers would be “taken care of” somehow (like Death takes care of those teenagers in the Final Destination movies) if they weren’t returned to their proper time frame. So your plane passengers are toast because the universe wants things to balance. Yeah, makes no sense to me, either.
