The Office (US) vs. The Office (UK)

I don’t find much of your list funny. Sorry!

BBT is damn good, though.

What current British comedies would you say top this list?

I would say that Gervais’s “Office” and “Extras” are right up there with my list. It’s interesting that most of his claimed influences are American – Friends, Seinfeld, Larry Sanders, Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I can’t think of any current British comedies that make this grade.

I was replying to a post which cited Seinfeld, so “current” wasn’t an issue. Neither is Friends. Not heard of Larry Sanders. Curb was amusing, but not hilarious, for the first 3 seasons or so but got boring after that. Hard to imagine it influencing The Office which predates it by some time, though!

Honestly, British comedy for me at the moment is in panel shows and stand ups rather than sitcoms. I think sitcoms are dead here, but the other two formats are doing very well.

Current shows, then - I’ve mentioned BBT a couple of times. That’s very good. Nothing else, really, comedy-wise, for me.

Over here - Peep Show, a few sketch shows, Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie to You?, and, my current favourite, Celebrity Juice. Panel shows won’t translate for you though - you won’t recognise the celebrities or get the topical jokes. So it’s hard to compare.

Nothing sitcom-wise over here has my attention, but as I said, the sitcom format isn’t really in vogue here right now. Swings and roundabouts. It’ll come back, I’m sure.
