The reason that Indians have different rules and laws are because we do feel some regret about what we did to them. They set up their own casinos beyond our normal laws. they have different rules in regards to hunting and fishing. We can not turn Manhattan into farm land again. but we do see that we we treated them wrongly.Ane we do make some attempts to recognize that.
None of the propositions offered up by various diplomats (or Gadaffi) would work. Its the elephant in the room that no peace process wants to acknowledge, but one side wants to kill the other. Without taking that into account, one or two state solutions cant work. Parodoxically, taking that into account, we cannot have a one or two state solution.
Realistically, what I think will happen is that Palestinian birthrates will eventually render Jews a minority in their own country if left unopposed, but Jewish leaders would call for some kind of nationwide orgy to stem the tide. Unfortunately, history and demographics would dictate that cannot be sustained, and probably within our lifetimes, but certainly within our children’s, we’ll have an unsustainable situation in which we see the Jews rapidly becoming the minority. I wouldnt want to be around in Israel for the shit that’s going to cause.
I think Israel needs to quickly start implementing programs to assimilate large parts of the non-Jewish population in their state. For the same reason that wealth and freedom seem to mitigate extremism, they need to get those Arabs who are already assimilated into positions of power and influence to hopefully calm the ones who are still poor and angry. Some kind of affirmative action program might need to be implemented.
My feeling is that a state is only a state so long as they are able to defend their territorial claims. I guess might makes right. It shouldnt be so, but thats the way the world works. I dont want to see any bloodshed in the area of either Jews or Muslims, but I will not be pining for an earlier, Jewy-er time if the Arabs eventually take over Israel. I’ll be upset at the killing, but I would defend the emergent Arab state as legitimate even if it was built on the backs of Jews. Theres no grownup in the playground when it comes to countries, everyone is their own policemen. If the Arabs take over and hold on to Israel, they are the legitimate rulers
Arbitrary and indeed contrived.
It seems there are plenty of people on both sides who want to kill the other side. (Or to be more optimistic, plenty of people on both sides willing to make peace.)
Anticipating a peaceful outcome to a “one-state solution” is about as realistic as cramming Der Trihs and the Pope into the same sleeping bag and expecting Brokeback Mountain.
I could see that!
… and now I can’t unsee it. Mine eyes!
I disagree. While I’m fairly neutral on who deserves the land, I think its plain to see that the Palestinian side has a monopoly on the murderous intentions. Even assuming my most biased mindset, I simply see the Israelis as wanting to steal land
Now to be fair, I am convinced that sometimes, the Israelis dont care about collateral damage, and are unnecessarily reckless in the taking of life. I wouldnt say they are on the same level of hatred as the Palestinians though, who actively seek out innocent bystanders to murder instead of simply shrugging it off when a targeted strike on a terrorist kills innocent people
Who’s taking care of Baruk Goldstein’s grave nowadays?
(By the way, someone in the Times today was talking about the Five State Solution.)
Anybody know?
