42Geek… I don’t think you’re helping your cause at all. LDs and mental illness aren’t the domain of poor people. All of the cases people have introduced of infanticide seem to be middle-class or wealthier mothers.
The fact that you have a schema in mind worries me. When you see someone (God forbid) in a tattered Starter jacket do you ascribe all of those qualities in your post to them? Do you see how you’re generalizing and stereotyping here? Or do you want to hold on to the “Tattered Starter Jacket Club” moniker for some reason
Again… we just don’t have a lot of information, so maybe it’s best to wait and find out more rather than spew out arbitrary explanations for this tragedy that are based on your assumptions about this person’s education, family life, and mental health. I think we can all agree this was a monstrous crime, a innocent child suffered and died a horrible death, and the person responsible will have to face justice for this murder.
Sorry. That second sentence should read: “LDs and mental illness aren’t the domain of just poor people.”
Look at the explosion of autism, dyslexia, ADHD, and eating disorders in middle class and high income communities. There’s plenty of developmental delays and disorders to go around.
Prolly should be a question mark at the end of the sentence in that second paragraph as well.
Sure, she was probably acting in an odd fashion, but just because someone’s acting a little strangely doesn’t mean they’re going to kill someone. You can testify to that. So, the people in her house may have thought she was being a little weird, but they never *dreamed *she would kill her baby.
I said in my first post that I knew two women who had suffered from post-partum. I told you about my aunt. Now, I’ll tell you about the other. I’ll call her “Judy.”
Judy had her baby two years ago. Her family reports she seemed a little blue, but otherwise seemed fine. She cared for the baby dilligently and was affectionate with her husband. One night, about two months after the baby was born, Judy’s husband woke up and found her standing over the crib with a pillow in her hands.
The whole family stepped in to help, taking shifts to stay with Judy and the baby. They got her counselling. After about a month, Judy seemed much better. She was no longer acting like she felt depressed and she was her “old self” again.
One day, while her mother had the shift, Judy expressed an intense craving for some cheeseburgers. Her mother figured it would be alright to leave Judy alone while she drove to McDonalds to buy some. Thank God she took the baby with her when she went. The moment the door shut behind her, Judy went into the bathroom and hanged herself. She had worked very hard to convince her family that she was normal so that she could get a chance to be alone.
Her family, of course, is consumed by guilt, blaming themselves for not being able to see what she was planning. But Judy was a smart woman. She knew how to hide what she was feeling. She didn’t want them to see.
China may have been the same way: inwardly tormented but hiding it from the people around her. Or maybe they just didn’t care enough to pay close attention. Who knows?

This happened approximately 15 to 18 years ago. Bat shit insane is the only way to describe their actions and appearance. I knew one of the paramedics who responded to this call and he said that with 3 months every Police Officer, Firefighter and EMT that had actually entered the apartment and saw the child had quit their jobs. They did not want to ever run the risk of having to see that again in their lifetime.
Sorry…maybe a bad choice of words. is causing the misunderstanding. I’m **not **talking about LD as in a disorder like dyslexia or dyscacluia (sp?..math version of dyslexia). I’m dyscalculic and actually somewhat developmentally delayed(like Asperger’s or just being kinda young for my age) myself, due to a genetic disorder.
I don’t really think that English has a term for the type of person I’m trying to describe. Maybe slow learner-type (the type of person who tests “dull normal”…like not exactly MR, but not exactly bright) raised in the dysfunction of the ghetto? NOT saying that everyone in the inner city is like this…but there does seem to be a subpopulation, which fits this description to a T
I really don’t appreciate the tattered starter jacket jokes. I think if you spent a day working with my mom, you’d see what I’m saying. She sees stuff that is almost enough to make you turn Republican, at least as far as social welfare programs go!
Maybe I’m wrong…maybe China isn’t of this particualr subpopulation.
Lissa, still…I mean I know there are people who can really hide psychosis well…but this just seems very very extreme. I can’t quite wrap my mind around “faking it” when just a short time before, being so psycotic that you used something as painful as a microwave to kill someone!
There is a woman at a hospital near here that has had 13 late LATE term miscarriages. Not because she wants to get pregnant: because she’s a strung out crackwhore and doesn’t give a damn. She’s one seriously fucked up lady, but no one can do anything about it.
It’s not necessarily a matter of “faking it.” Women like Andrea Yates who appear calm after killing their children aren’t faking their serenity-- they’re actually numb. The illness has them so out-of-order that they don’t feel the grief and horror that “normal” people would.
The painful method of death is irrelevant. Andrea yates actually chased her children down to drown them in a bathtub polluted with urine and feces. Drowning isn’t a pleasant way to go, either.
Actually, I would say that the horrible and bizarre method of death argues more in favor of this woman being mentally ill. A woman who just wanted her baby dead wouldn’t choose that method. If she was ill-informed about forensics, she probably would have smothered it or poisoned the baby.
