The Park Forest Meteorite of the Midwest

The radio and tv news just wants to be about Iraq, but I want to know more details of the thing that made the bright light in the sky last night and then the horrible explosion sound like I never heard the likes of before. It was experienced in several midwestern states and pieces fell in Park Forest, IL, which is about 35 miles south of Chicago. They were wondering if it is space debris or a meteorite. So my question is has anybody heard any more about it? I couldn’t find any pieces in my back yard, which is right around there. Did the FAA or some authority in charge of the atmosphere know about this phenomenon? I suppose I’ll just have to read about it in the paper or go and gawk at the houses where they fell, but does anybody know the exact address in Park Forest and if they are selling meteor-related items or pieces?

Some of the Google News hits. There’s quite a few, don willard.

My husband saw the flash last night and he was scared poopless. It was bright white like lightning but lasted for about two full seconds and there was no thunder. I was asleep.

He found it interesting that cops and news reporters were handling the meteorite bits, as he speculated they may be toxic somehow…could this be true?

There is very little prospect of a meteorite being toxic, but if such an object were found, it would be very valuable…
the heavy metals in the solar system are concentrated in the region closer to the sun than the earth, I believe, and objects from that region are very rare.
Or were you thinking of biohazard? A meteorite with signs of life would be an even more valuable object…

I guess my husband just found it odd that “Susie on the street” reporter was holding the meteorite and basically passing it around to people. I would think it would be in pretty guarded custody.
