The Penguin was amazing!

She connected the carbon monoxide exhaust from the furnace to the house’s ventilation. Johnny Viti isn’t dead because she opened his bedroom window

Right, but she did the carbon monoxide thing the night before – that’s why she took the little girl outside. But she didn’t open Viti’s window until just before she woke him up. He still would have been breathing carbon monoxide for hours.

No, she opened his window immediately before she took the little girl out of the house. They made a whole scene of showing her specifically opening it.

Ah, OK, I missed that detail. Thanks! Ignorance fought!

She walks into a room, looks at a photo on a wall, opens a window wide and leans on it to take a big puff of her cigarette and tap the ashes outside, then closes the window about halfway back down again. Then it cuts to her leading the girl downstairs with a promise of cake. The location and significance of the window was revealed later.

And if she doesn’t win it, it will be a travesty of epic proportions. She is utterly amazing as an actor in this role. Or she’s actually fucking nuts and the acting she’s doing is in the scenes where Sofia looks sane - either way, great job!

FYI, the above is a joke. Cristin is just that damn good.

I thought the episode was a bit padded out; after awhile in Arkham I turned to my kid (the biggest DC comics fan I have ever known) and said “Yeah, yeah, I get it. They’re belaboring the point.” She agreed.

But Milioti (who is, apparently, also a huge Batman fan) made the episode watchable all the same. She has been mesmerizing throughout the series.

Since the Heath Ledger Joker there’s been a bunch of characters playing villians who act CRAAAAAAAAZYYYYY, perhaps in the belief that CRAAAAZZZYYY is good acting, and maybe forgetting that in that movie the Joker was clearly very sane, just psychopathic. The worst offender was the guy who played Moriarty in “Sherlock,” that was just a train wreck. But you know what’s hard? Playing a person who actually is deranged but who - like, of course, the great majority of people losing grip on their sanity - is, in fact, pretty rational and normal most of the time. How do you show that?

Well, Milioti is knocking it out of the damned park.

She kinda reminds me of Lizzy Caplan’s performance as Annie Wilkes in “Castle Rock” in that both characters have a sympathetic backstory and yet you’re kinda afraid they’re about to murder someone. I suppose it helps they resemble each other a bit, but both do a terrific job of acting generally normal and sane, but with that touch of madness bubbling under there. The kind of person who if you met them you’d have no overt reason to think them nuts, but there’d be something in your subconscious saying “there’s something wrong here.”

Good comparison (Lizzy is also awesome). I think CM is at her best when she’s being “quiet crazy”. The expression on her face / in her eyes is what really gets to me.

We just watched the first four episodes. That decision was based (mostly) on what I’ve read here. I’m not normally a fan of “comic book” movies/shows. For the most part, I think you could throw out the whole super villain bit. Its a good drama without it. Far fetched in places? Certainly but, hey, its entertainment.

I fail to see the need to make CF look like that. Give him the bum foot so he earns the nickname. Maybe pad him up a little and then let him act. I never heard of Milioti but agree with what people in this thread are saying. Finally, I’m seeing CF mimicking Syl from the Sopranos a bit with the shrugs and twitches. YMMV.

I knew her from Fargo and the Star Trek episode of Black Mirror and that one standalone episode of Mythic Quest, but I had no idea she was this brilliant.

I knew her from How I Met Your Mother where she was so amazing she basically ruined the ending they had planned (they should have called an audible and changed it). She was also very good in a one season sitcom no one watched called A to Z.

HIMYM is also where I first saw her and I had an instant dislike, but really only because I was so annoyed by the show that I was basically hate watching it (stupid, I know). Then I saw her in Palm Springs (2020 movie) and saw how good she really is.
I must admit, I’m more invested in watching the performances than the actual plot of Penguin, much like Only Murders in the Building.

“You know what thrives in a place like this?”

I was thinking “Bats.”. But nope, it’s The Mushroomcave.

who was refilling that generator with fresh fuel? I have had to clean the carbs on my generators after leaving fuel in them for just six months.

I had the same thiught. Not about the carburator, but about fuel breaking down.

Fuel has a shelf-life of plot. Always had, always will.

It did only last like 30 seconds or so, I wasn’t bothered.

Also wouldn’t you smell gasoline if it was in very close proximity to your face?

I wonder if Oz gave his old girlfriend that light fixture?

BTW my wife and her family cook Persian food and the dish Malroni made is delicious (and really is often eaten with Yogurt but not by me as I hate yogurt).
