The Percy Jackson series

Just curious if anyone has read the Percy Jackson series of books. Are they any good? How would you compare them story and writing wise to the Harry Potter series (which I’ve read multiple times). If it matters my wife and I are in our late 30s, but kids at heart.

I’ve read the first two in the series.
They appealed to me only because I’ve had 5 years of latin and so it’s always nice to see SOMEONE trying to reference and bring the tales back to today’s youth. They’re no where in the range of Harry Potter though in my opinion, and maybe either on par or a little bit less in terms of Plot to the Artemis Fowl series. But they’re enjoyable, and if you’ve had any in depth background in mythology or Latin (and not the nitpicky type of person), then the book will open itself up to a WHOLE new level for you because you’ll be able to catch a lot of the more subtle references.

So the books are good on two levels for that reason, and they’re quick and easy to read. So plot wise- nothing complicated there, enjoyability? They’re good, if you liked Artemis Fowl, you won’t mind these (though it does seem a bit catered to the younger crowd way more so than Harry Potter and AF were, just by the slang and references to modern culture). However, it has some GREAT references to ancient mythology which REALLY give the book it’s major selling point.

So if you enjoy the classics and wish someone was trying to revive classical mythology for today’s youth, it’s great for that. Just to sit around and read, and then explain “do you want to know about the REAL story of X or Y or Z?” and then go and looking up those myths as well.

I found them to be fun reads. Definately aimed towards younger kids, but still intelligent. I admit, I’m waiting for the fifth one to come out.

My 11-year-old started them a couple of years ago and has really enjoyed them. He keeps pace with new ones as they come out. He also enjoys Artemis Fowl, the Warrior series about cat tribes and a few other series…

It came out on the 5th.

I enjoy them and all the mythology references.
