The pineapple--it burns!

OK, now imagine the bromelain wreaking its havoc whilst your oral allergy syndrome is going off the scale-

Stuff’s still yummy, however.

Interesting–I’ve always gotten a slight burning feeling from fresh pineapple, though maybe more of a bite or sting than a burn. Never thought that it might be a mild allergy. I definitely get OAS from cherries and from kiwi, another allergic reaction that I didn’t figure out for years–I just thought that the fruit made my mouth feel itchy because I knew it had that hairy, bristly skin.

Bromelain is strong stuff. Does anyone remember the Hawaii Five-O episode where a suspect didn’t have complete fingerprints because they’d been eroded by working with pineapples? I can’t find a link to the episode but here’s a page with links to scientific articles on the phenomenon.

Not for the squeamish. Fair warning. :smack:

I am a mad scientist at heart, and I have eczema and also bad heel calluses, and had a bright ™ idea last year, when having a bad skin month. I bought bromelain (pineapple) extract and made an unguent with it mixed with vitamin E cream and petroleum jelly for my poor feet. Oh, the itch, and the pain. And the itchy pain. But it didn’t slough off the dead skin in a big mass like I expected. It made weird Mars-mountain runners in the calluses and basically made everything worse. I still am fighting with the scars from that battle a year later…

One of my dad’s former partners used to soak pineapple in salt water. She said it removed the sting. I’ve never really felt the sting, so I don’t know if it works or not… Maybe it’s worth a try?

I wonder if I might have a mild oral allergy to peaches and raspberries. Both seem to have a “harshness” of sorts to their flavor, to me, which isn’t found in canned fruit or artificial versions of the flavors.

You don’t consider a raw whole pineapple purchased in the US mainland to be fresh pineapple?

I do love fresh pineapple. I could eat a ton of it, but I might as well just chew on a razorblade.

It rips my tongue to shreds after just a little bit. But it’s almost worth it for just one more bite!

If I
eat too much of any fruit ( excluding bananas)I get a peri-oral rash around my lips. It looks like I got out of the lines with bright red lipstick. Burns and itches like crazy.
OP get some Neosporin with pain reliever in it. I would take a benadryl, YMMV.

I believe that is the most common location for peri-oral rashes.

When my sister was pregnant with her oldest she was craving pineapple something fierce. She ate most of a fresh pineapple in one sitting and then didn’t understand why her lips swelled up to twice normal size and her gums bled. I don’t think she’s eaten much pineapple since.

Duh! Some times I can’t edit. Sorry.

There are probably some expensive specialty stores where you can buy pineapple flown in from warmer climates that morning. But from just some random grocery store, no, it’s not what I’d call fresh. Trust me, it makes a huge difference.

Never heard of this. I let them ripen for 2-4 days before I core them, and it doesn’t seem to lose flavor until you cut it up So I can’t see any reason why they are not as good as they would be in their home country.

According to this, either soaking the pineapple in salt water or combining it with a different protein for the enzymes to eat up (like yogurt) is a good way to help deal with the problem.

I love pineapple and cottage cheese, but I usually eat canned pineapples. I avoid raw pineapple due to this problem, but wonder if raw pineapple and cottage cheese would be ok due to the milk proteins.

Interesting. I ate a whole baby pineapple today (99 cents on sale!) and it was delicious, but I didn’t experience any of this burning sensation. I chewed around the core and everything to get every last delicious morsel out of it. I guess it’s very much dependent on the person eating. And, god damn, it is sooooo much better than the canned stuff.

Fresh PA and Noosa Yoghurt is OOTW.

It would be worth it if you went fresh. Just saying. A little extra effort. You will thank me.

I have noticed recently I can’t take canned pineapple juice anymore. There is a flavor in it like metal, or preservative or something else wrong.
