Aug 30 Craig Morgan released a powerful tribute song to his son that passed away three years ago. Craig had several top ten hits in the 00’s but no longer has a label behind him. The Father My Son and the Holy Ghost is an independent release.
It was charting on iTunes in the seventies early Monday. Blake Shelton started urging all his friends and fans to listen, rate and buy the song. Many big platforms on Twitter got behind it.
The song,The Father My Son and the Holy Ghost charted number 1 on the iTunes country and overall charts within 24 hours. That’s just incredible. Especially without a record label behind it.
It pays to have a powerful friend like Blake Shelton. He’s one of the more influential stars in country music today. Social media sometimes gets misused but it did something good this time.
Here’s Blake’s one man promotion of a song. He’s not done yet. I think the Today Show will be booking Craig Morgan and that will push sales even higher.
The promotion worked because this is such a powerful song. Nearly everyone has lost someone special to them. This song powerfully taps into the healing and grieving that goes with it.
Eric didn’t have his song propelled to #1 in 24 hours by social media. He’s also a much, much bigger name star than Craig Morgan.
There’s so many people on social media. Blake has 20 million followers. Ellen DeGeneres has 78 million and she supported Blake’s campaign. A lot of big Twitter platforms got behind this campaign.
The song is okay. It should do well on the Christian music charts. And if it gets covered by say, Shelton, it will go high on the country charts. It’s not my favorite music genre, but I live in an area that will just eat this song up.
I sent a link to the song to the lil’wrekker. I’ll get her opinion, and report back.
This could be an opening for a new genre of Dead Son songs. I’m working on one now:
My son is dead, but I love Jesus
and my pet monkey, he’s a Rhesus.
But I got sick from all his sneezes.
I got Monkey AIDS, says the electrophoresis.
But that’s okay because I love Jesus.
And everything he does in Heaven will please us.
If that was the case, then we’d never have had Michael Bolton or Vanilla Ice.
(Personally I think Led Zeppelin’s “All of My Love” was the best dead child tribute)
According to David Allen Coe (and song writers) the perfect country song needs to reference, Mom, Trucks, getting drunk and Trains. So its not the perfect country song. At all. It has a hook though. And that will get it played.
I watched video once, listened once more. I couldn’t watch the singers face again. It was too weird. He did some strange grimacing. (He may not be able to help it, so I do have some sympathy for him) Someone with a better face will have to get in there and cover it.
I can’t imagine any major star covering this song. It’s such a intimate and powerful view of Craig and his wife’s loss of a son.
Blake & his Ex, Miranda wrote a similar song about his older brother’s death. Blake couldn’t make himself record it. His wife, Miranda Lambert recorded Over You. Blake & Miranda won CMA Song of the Year in 2012 and ACM song of the year in 2013.
The pain of losing a loved one can spark incredible creativity.
I have talked with my choir director about performing The Father My Son and the Holy Ghost on a Sunday evening at church. Craig’s personal testimony fits well with the smaller and less formal atmosphere of a Sunday morning service.
I’ve already started learning the guitar part and am slowly finding the melody on the piano.
It’ll be early next year before it can be scheduled.
