The Price Of American Groceries: Ongoing Updates

Trump promised to bring the price of American groceries down to earth. And he believes strongly that he is going to do it. So it only makes sense to have a thread monitoring his unbelievable progress. Please list the enormous savings you have noticed here. In the unlikely event tariffs to countries (which account for, say, 74% of fruits and vegetables imported) actually raise prices, you could list that too. But Trump says that isn’t going to happen, and when has He been wrong before?

The price of 95% lean ground beef (I love it, Mrs. Plant hates it-but I digress) went from $8.95/pound under Biden to $9.95 under Trump. I am certain that it is sleepy Joe’s fault.

I couldn’t tell you the price of eggs because during our visit to Costco two days ago, they had no eggs and no signs of any sort.

A single egg now costs $40.

This is life in Trump’s America.

Oh, good one!

In Ontario, a dozen large white eggs are (US) $3.50. I can buy eighteen large brown eggs for (US) $5.50. In either case, about thirty cents each. Ten years ago, Canadian eggs were twice as expensive as American ones.

This is why the US Bureau of Labor produce Consumer Price Indexes

Semi-seriously, my food and sundries bill had a $50 spike the last two weeks. Because I bought replacement N95 masks, and cycled my emergency shelf-stable food supplies.

The first because, well, I expect his government to take no action on our next pandemic (some bird flu mutation, Captain Trips, or Flaming Pustule Mule Disease) and figured I’d get some while they’re still cheapish to toss in the back of the cabinet.

The second, because while it’s a year or two early, if there is another emergency in Colorado (fires, snow, etc) I’m expecting that federal aid to a state that voted against him three times is going to be slow to arrive if at all. I’ll slowly finish replacing all the emergency and 72 hour kit over the course of the next 6 months even if it’s early.

Thankfully we buy coffee from Costco, so we’re good for quite a while even if the @#$%^&*() “emergency” tariffs had stayed up, but I’m still afraid we might see some short term panic buying and supply issues there as well.

I’m not the only one noticing a lack of eggs.

The $40 egg I linked above arrived, and it was just a shell! Live in Trump’s America…

Kidding aside, one of my best treasure finds is an antique scrimshaw ostrich egg with very detailed mythical figures and whaling scenes carved. And it’s guilt-free, no whales or walrus involvement. It’s very similar to the one at left:

I just paid C$7. for a dozen large eggs. There were cheaper noname.

Kroger here has a dozen eggs at $9.99.

Wow that’s beautiful. I take it you have no 4 year old’s in the house?

I don’t or any other usual hazards like pets or natural disasters but, even so, I still don’t have it OUT, where it could get knocked over in a freak accident/sleepwalking mishap.

Mine has the same band across the lower half as the one in the photo, possibly the same artist or workshop, and came with a much later tripod stand.
