The Pub pres candidates -- who will dance back to the left if nominated, how far?

I understand the the Pubs are trying to get nominted by activists in their own party, 3/4 of whom still think Bush is doing a good job. So it kind of stands to reason that by and large they seem like raging idiots to the rest of us, so far. But most of them have to know that if they stay as far to the right as they are now, the next election will be a rout of historic proportions.

So who will renounce the most of what they stand for today? Mind that I don’t really see this as a bad thing – I want a president who has a more pragmatic and less dogmatic approach to dealing with America’s problems. I want a president who can, after making a decision that turns out to be wrong, admit it and switch course and move on. Hell, even switching course and moving on WITHOUT admitting it would be an improvement.

I’m thinking Romney is the most likely to dance back to the left, as he seems to be the master of denial of past positions among them. I would think Ron Paul would be the least, but is also the least likely to be nominated. I saw that Mike Huckabee has already backed off a bit from his “don’t believe in evolution” stance – as long as there is a Creator in the loop, he won’t quibble over time periods and methods. McCain and Giuliani are bigger cyphers to me, but I suspect they would move a god deal back toward the center too.

Some other thoughts on this?
