I used to have on a tape made by a friend Replacements covering the Cruella DeVille song - if only I could find that again.
I think Middlecase is the only other person I’ve run across whose favorite 'mats/Westerberg album is All Shook Down. And Attitude happens to be my favorite song from it, too. Other faves: Left Of The Dial, If Only You Were Lonely, along with many already mentioned.
I saw Paul at the Guthrie and in Madison in 2002. The Guthrie show (Saturday) was ok but not that great, except for what I think was the first time he did *Crackle and Drag * live. Most reviews of that three-show gig say Friday and Sunday were the better nights. The Madison show was really fun. The audience was totally with him all the way. Two weeks ago I saw all three Minneapolis shows. Minneapolis is not a good place for audience interaction. Or maybe it was the theater.
Of the five albums he’s released in the past two-and-a-half (?) years, **Come Feel Me Tremble ** is my favorite. A couple of jaunty numbers with great hooks, an upbeat ode to Oxycontin (Hillbilly Junk), and my personal favorite…Pine Box. Much better than My Dad from his most recent CD. I could have done without both versions of Crackle And Drag though. I was hoping I’d get to hear Pine Box in Minneapolis but no such luck. I’m not liking Folker all that much. There are a couple of songs I like but that’s about it so far.
You can. It’s on Disc 2 of their “best of” compilation All For Nothing/Nothing For All.
All For Nothing, Disc 1, is album cuts; Nothing For All is B-sides, studio outtakes, live cuts and other miscellany. And yes, it does have Cruella DeVille, along with a kick-arse live cover of Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones and a whole bunch of other great stuff.
It’s also in the album of Disney covers called Stay Awake, in “Medley #7”.
My favorite song is… well, call it a toss-up between “I.O.U.” and “Alex Chilton,” tracks 1 & 2 respectively off of Pleased To Meet Me, which is my favorite LP of theirs.
I think the one my friend taped it off of was Stay Awake, in “Medley #7” - I will have to decide whether I want the best of the 'Mats or Stay Awake - or BOTH!! Yes BOTH!!
Do you know if it will be 21+? If not, I might try convincing some friends to take me.
I love their earlier, rawer stuff too: All Shook Down just struck me as the perfect album for them to go out on: mellow, and accepting, but quietly triumphant, like, “Hell, we never sold a damn album or troubled the charts, and no-one’s heard of us but our fans, but screw you because we know we were good.” Damn me if there’s a bad track on that album, and they all come together so beautifully. A late night, a few shots of bourbon, and it’s perfect listening.
Sorry, shows at the Turf are always 21+.
Yep. Near the end, to sit on a big arse leather couch while he did ‘Skyway’ and ‘Here comes a Regular’. Somebody gave him a cowboy hat so he did an old country & western song, or tried to at least, before bursting into giggles and rocking ‘Cant Hardly Wait’. This was at The Scala in King Cross, London BTW.

For all your Paul needs.
Damn. Well, thanks for telling me.
Maybe I’ll at least check out his recordings.
Put me down as loving

Depending upon my mood.
All I wanna do is drink beer for breakfast
Love it all. They absolutely ruled. I saw them my sophomore year in college and couldn’t talk for two days after, I screamed so hard during the show. I couldn’t hear the next day either; which almost seemed worth it (it actually scared the piss out of me until the ringing wore off).
I’ve got all their discs, though I’d say “Tim” and “Pleased to Meet Me” are my faves.
I liked their sense of humor, in addition to their boozy stomp. “Waitress in the Sky” and “Androgynous” got worn off the tape just as much as “I’ll Buy” and “Alex Chilton”.
Definitely Answering Machine.
Let it Be is my favourite album but Kiss Me on the Bus is my favourite song.
Replacements were just all confused. Bacon and cigarettes make a lovely dinner.
My wife saw them open for Tom Petty. After 2 or 3 incomplete, drunken mess songs, their set was over. I’m so jealous I missed it.
Once you sing “Kiss Me On The Butt”, you’ll never hear “bus” again.
It was “fingernails and cigarettes, a lousy dinner”.
My only beef with your first sentence is the use of the word ‘just’. Though The Replacements may have often been confused, they were very reguarly much more than that.
And Prince, and The Time, and Gear Daddies, and the Burbs, and Limited Warranty (OK, maybe not the last one.) Oh, I miss the 80’s music scene.
“Let It Be” and “Don’t Tell a Soul” are my two favorites, but neither of 'em have “Androgynous” which is such a kickass song.
And Soul Asylum
