Doctor Sleep by Stephen King just came out…its the sequel to The Shining. Its awesomely scary through 100 pages. I expect some really bad dreams the nexr few nights. Kings best and scariest work in ages.
Thanks for the heads up, I’m off to the bookstore!
Cool. I pre-purchased a while ago and it downloaded yesterday. Looking forward to it.
I’m probably 50 pages in. So far so good!
Just got it on my kindle yesterday. Stayed up too late last night reading…
I’ll be curious to see what your opinions are, compared to some of the comments on Amazon.
I’ve said that so often with King’s books, and then came the endings.
I’ll keep checking this thread though.
21 pages in, but I expect to get it read by tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
I hope it’s good…please let it be good
I’m going to buy it, hardcover, unread. It better be good! ( Or else, uh, I guess I lose. )
Up to page 247, still pretty good so far
I saw this in the bookstore tonight - my library doesn’t have it in yet for me to put a hold on it. ARRRRGHHHHH!
(I’ll most likely buy the book, but I prefer paperbacks.)
Im liking that some of the horroe in Torrances life is the result of real causes as opposed to anything supernatural…dont want to give examples because they might be spoilers. King is really maturing as a writer. The supernatural material is brilliant and makes me not want to read at night. So Im a wussy.
Do you have to have read The Shining to understand this, or is seeing the movie enough?
Movie viewing is fine. In fact the book has enough about what generally went on in the hotel that I think the book could stand alone…
You’ll just need to know that the move and book endings differed somewhat.
In the book, Halloran lived & stayed involved in Danny’s life. Also Danny’s dad had a moment of clarity at the end where he threw off the Overlook’s influence for a moment and refrained from killing Danny.
“Is” maturing? He’s 66 years old!
That said, I’ve loved his last handful of books - I think he’s gone away from just trying to shock and gross people out and do what he does best, tell stories that I can’t put down.
I liked it a lot. Finished it today. Won’t spoil it for anyone, but it’s miles above Under The Dome.
I have the signed/limited on order and am really looking forward to it. Though I’m impatient enough to read the trade release when I get my hands on it tomorrow.
I’m reading it now. I’m having a little trouble with some of the geography of all things. In my head I sound like the Comic Book Guy, but I keep saying, “Telepathy, OK, psychic vampires, no problem, precognition, why not, but is this some kind of magic universe where Wilmington, NC has a train station and there’s a vantage point where you can look down on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge? That’s just silly.”
I know Steven King has been to this area, they shot Firestarter, Maximum Overdrive, and Under the Dome here, would it have been a huge problem to get the landmarks correct?
