This article details how Hitchcock tried to reinvent himself and was rebuffed by a Universal Studio that was afraid of damaging its AH brand. Its an interesting read.

Would it really have been that much “worse” than Frenzy?
I know that Michael Powell’s career took a hit with the 1960 Peeping Tom. But 7+ years later the 60s had changed the rules quite a bit.
It’s a shame. * Frenzy * showed that Hitchcock could handle explicit violence quite well, and I have no doubt this film would have been right up there with * A Clockwork Orange* and * Straw Dogs. *
I couldn’t agree more. And its a loss to film lovers everywhere.
