As long as Lucas’ wife is still dead and buried, here’s my Chuck Connors story, courtesy of Joe Garagiola.

It’s 1949 and Connors is one of a bunch of moderately talented young prospects hoping to catch on with the Dodgers. He is warned that Branch Rickey, the Dodger’s GM, is an extremely straightlaced Calvinist. Sure enough, when Connors meets Rickey, the first question the old man asks him is “Do you go out with women?”

Connors replied, “No sir, I’m a married man.”

“Do you smoke?”

“No sir.”

“Do you drink?”

At which point Connors slammed his fist down on the desk and said “If I have to drink to play for this team, I’m leaving!”
