I spotted it at Blockbuster the other day, but decided against it. Still, it didn’t look or sound like your usual slasher-pic. Is it any good, or utter crap?
I thought it was good and an interesting take on horror. The acting was good (I have a soft spot for Jena Malone after Saved!). It’s predictable but don’t let that sway you off of it.
Jena Malone’s in it? Wow. Wonder if it’s a step up or down the career tree.
My friend liked it. I did not.
A horrible piece of crappy shit. But that’s just my opinion.
This is pretty much my feeling as well (including the soft spot for Jena Malone).
I think it’s worth a rental though, it was a pretty enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes.
Hopefully the movie is better than the book. You could see the end coming halfway through, and I only slogged through to the last page because I hate to not finish a book.
I thought the book was a lot better than the movie. The book merited 6/10.
I didn’t much care for it myself. The effects were good for a man-eating plant story, but otherwise I wasn’t really impressed. I wouldn’t care to see it again.
I thought it was fun. The perfect rental movie, really: on one hand, I’m glad that I didn’t pay $10 to see it on the big screen; on the other, it would be pointless to watch on the Sci-Fi Channel or whatever since they’d cut out all the gore.
Was disappointed by a lack of nudity among the male leads, however.
There was a huge continuity error that really kind of ticked me off:
In the opening scene, they show the girl in a dark place with a cell phone in her hand desperatly trying to get a signal to call out, but that scene never took place in the main movie, so did she get caught after escaping and thrown back into the temple? Also, by escaping does she allow the vine to spread to other places since she had spores growing all over her? Why else was it such a bid deal for the villagers to not let them leave the pyramid?
Still, it makes a good renter. Watch at night and keep the lights out.
I think you misunderstood that scene.
The girl in the dark place wasn’t Jena Malone, it was one of the women from the dig.
When Jena Malone escaped it’s not entirely clear that she had the vine in her because she never had an open wound. But the alternate ending shows Jena Malone’s grave (she died later apparently) with the vine growing out of it.
It was a big deal to the villagers because it was something that just done. It was tradition.
When I came home from watching The Happening, I was pretty pissed, a reaction I believe to be shared by a majority of moviegoers. However, I’d been half expecting disappointment, so I was prepared – a friend of mine had recommended me The Ruins as an enjoyable horror flic, which I had waiting for me at home, knowing nothing about it.
I switched it off in disgust with the first ominous rustling of leaves. No idea if it’s a good one or not, I just couldn’t take any more villainous vines.
One other thing bothered me about that:
When the girls descend into the pyramid later, they find that girl’s corpse. Howcum? The plants should’ve eaten her, like they ate everyone else.
Of course we know why – the corpse is there to scare the girls and the audience. But it’s still inconsistent.
By the way, I’m convinced that The Ruins is really a documentary about my Forsythia.
Oh, well that makes a big more sense then. Thanks Justin!
You know, I usually expect most horror flicks to be somewhat of a letdown but this stinking heap was unwatchable. If I had rented it rather than seeing it in a theatre I would’ve turned it off within the first 10 minutes. Horrible horrible film.
I don’t blame Jena though, she was the only decent thing about the film.
I just finished Doomsday. If it’s better that that, I’ll be pleased. If it’s worse than that, I’ll be amazed. It did have some nice eye candy and fights, though.
It was the usual stupid-young-people-getting-into-a-very-bad-situation kind of film.
I don’t remember much about it, and I saw it recently.
