The Scale Modeling Thread

Done build #3 recently - the craze from last Dec. keeps crazin, and if the stash, below, is any indication, I just might keep on crazin on with the stuff. For a bit.
1:16 scale Richard Petty Dodge Charger…

The build was a bit of a slog. The high point was the installation of the (yay! working!) dash board lights. This beginner has yet to see any modellers try that in a car.
Now onto a big 1:12 scale Topolini…

daunting backlog!..(all acquired in last five months - gone bananas. The 1:12 scale Formula 1 at the very bottom - that one is super detailed - will need some stamina for it, indeed. Gotta, ahem, scale back a bit on the purchases, but in the meantime, arriving any day - a monstrous 1:8 :open_mouth: scale Jag E Type put out by the Monogram company)… (anyway, the stash)…

…the Jag E, which will take, like, extremely ridiculously forever…

The g/f hasn’t been real super duper crazy about it, trying tabulate what the entire stash would cost.
I’m so all over this. :slightly_smiling_face:

Build #4 all finished up - Fiat Cabriolet/Dragster Topolino.

Well, enough multi-posts - the next post is someone else’s, or this thread, sadly, dies.
Lame, but, oh well.

That virtual kitbashing game released into Early Access today so I tried it and requested a refund after 20 minutes. I can’t even play the tutorials because it won’t accept input from my XBox One controller, which takes precedent over keyboard + mouse so I can’t use them, either.

I worked on this very model for a good portion of a hot July during middle school!

Just the other day, I thought “If I win the lottery, I can afford to buy the full-size versions of some of those models I built!”

In which case, I’d paint my new '65 corvette in candy apple red… (Testor’s enamel, applied amateurly with a huge brush).

I mostly build models for gaming purposes. Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, Fallout: Wasteland Tactics, and Dungeons & Dragons mainly. I did branch out a little bit to paint a triceratops in 1:24 scale made by Pegasus Hobbies and that was a lot of fun. I do make us of airbrushes because it speeds up the painting process making it easier to create smooth color transitions in less time than it takes me with a brush. This is especially true when painting multiple squads.

I do custom action figures and dioramas–predominantly 1:18 scale. Been mostly focusing on Fallout and Warhammer 40k themed the last few years.

Dude…
Did it six months ago…

Meanwhile this is the current rogues gallery, started Dec. '22.

Stash has gotten a little bigger.

My pride build.

And for the absolute holy grail of all motherfreaking models, (well, for this chump, anyway), finally got this, last week, after ordering it last September - the 1937(?) Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. 1:8 scale, over 550 pieces (148 metal). Weighs a ton. Do not ask what I paid for this. Doors, hood and trunk open, plus a remote control to operate headlights, tailights, brake lights, and, yep - engine sounds (?!) Almost chicken to hit this one. Daunting thing. Maybe in the fall.

Interesting - I only use white primer under a white top coat.
For black, brown, silver, blue or any other dark topcoats - grey primer.
For yellow, red and ornage topcoats - pink primer.

Tamiya brand.

I too built a King George V battleship. My model building was done in my youth. And I now remember that my USMC enlistment and career can be “blamed” on scale models.

I was going to post it here but did not want to hijack the thread, so I started a new thread here:

Those of y’all who are on Facebook, check out Troy Deal’s work.

He does particularly good weathering stuff.
If you’re into vehicles, gotta check out Thomas Egelkraut - his Ferrari F80 and Testerossa are amazing. I’ve never seen detail like it. Other awesome builders this year have been Scott Corey, whose Open Fire and current Eldorocket you can just look at for days, stupified, and Peter Altwies, with a prolific output matched only by his quality. All on FB.

Soon will post an MPC 1:25 '72 GTO.

Last thing I recently fiinshed up - after 14 builds, starting Dec. '22 - my first kit bash, which involves combining at least two or more kits together. (Here - The Stingaree and The Digger.) I cut the Singaree in half and then flanked each half onto either side of the Digger. Lots of cardboard stock, putty (tons), extra styrene and brass rods were used in this crazy modification. Using a tiny hand vise I drilled holes up under the driver’s skull and eye sockets to install a micro LED light that I had to order from Illinois. (The skeleton itself was printed by someone in NJ). A couple pics here, and I have two posts near the top of this FB link with more pics…Luka Cee's Model Car Hobby Headquarters Public Group | Facebook

Got a cool little Nash Metropolitan to work on some time too, along with a humongous 1:8 '37 Bugatti with a gazillion parts.

I mostly paint miniatures for gaming in the 28mm scale. You can find an example here on Reddit. I’m getting to the point where I’m often proud of my painting, but not so good that I can consistantly churn out good stuff. But that’s okay, I’m doing this for fun. But I’m not getting any younger, and I’m starting to have difficulty focusing on objects that are close to me. I already wear contacts, but I’ve started wearing reading glasses.

I’m thinking of switching over to larger scale models. I rarely use my miniatures for their intended purpose of gaming, so I might as well paint something in a larger scale so it can clutter my house and collect dust.

I’ve worked in 1:18 scale action figures for decades now and in the last year I’ve found myself struggling with details even at that size. I painted one mini (a space marine) as part of hobby hangout event a month ago and that was rough. Even with my progressive lenses sometimes I’m just blopping on paint and hoping to clean it up later.

One of the few 1:20 F1 Tamiya kits my collection is missing! Nice!

Actually 1:12.

Um, may we take a boo at your collection?

I’ve got two of the big 1:12 kits, built long ago. The Ferrari 312 and Andretti’s Lotus. Beautiful car! Unfortunately, the gold pinstriping decals broke into a hundred pieces, so the car is just gloss black. Still got both of them in boxes on a shelf.

I’d post pics of the collection, but don’t really know how… I’ve got most, but not all of the 1:20. Of course, the Hunt McLaren is unobtainable. Not sure what else I’m missing. Got a butt-load of the 1:12 race bikes. Only built 3 of those.

Oh yeah?

Apparently one left.

At $80, gonna stay that way!

Just finshed:

Not sure if I am the first-ever modeller to attempt a 1:24 scale version of the Jag-hearse form “Harold and Maude”. Such a model does not exist, which I think is negligently and utterly stupid, (meanwhile, there’s a trillon models out there of a trillion different ‘movie cars’), so, I’m having to do a kit-bash of a '67 Jaguar E Type X-KE (tearing its roof off) and a '76 AMT Vega (tearing its roof off to plunk on to the Jag).
Lots of chopping up so far, with tons of putty to follow.
It’s warping my bloody mind, trying to get my head around it.

Now is when it’ll get really intense and tricky - lots of re-positioning and filling in, etc.
